Secure storage needed
in Anything that's not Eriba-related. Sun Jun 08, 2014 6:47 amby ellen (deleted)
Anyone know of a secure storage site around the Bury area that has 24hr access? We have been on our present site for 5yrs, it's hardstanding, secure with 24hr access. They have now decided to rent our compound out to the bus company that rent space from them and are squeezing us into their large compound. We will be like sardines and we worry that Doo dah will get damaged as other vans and motorhomes struggle to get in or out. The 24hr floodlit access is so important for us and this is what is causing us problems in finding a new storage site. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Thanks R. We are pretty concerned as we have always felt safe leaving Doods in storage on our present pitch but when we looked at the pitches they want us to choose from we were gutted to say the least. Looking forward to seeing you both in July and hearing all about your fantastic trip. Take care. Ellen.

I know that this is now a 5 year old thread but I'm new to the forum and fully aware of how irritating it is to invigilators when lazy surfers pose their questions without looking through the site already, surreptitiously expecting others to do their foot slogging for them! So this seems to be the appropriate spot in which to post my question and here goes...
I want my first caravan to be an Eriba, however, there is some "front end loading" to be done before I can make that wish manifest. Let us put aside for now the needle in a haystack search for the ideal van that you have, no doubt, already undertaken! First amongst these then is that, as the denizen of a flat, I don't have a drive on which to park my Eriba, so I need to identify a storage facility. Security is important of course, but so is ease of access because I'd like to get at my van when I want to, not when the storage facility dictates. I'd also like them to retrieve my van ready to hitch and I'm told that this is possible/desirable.
Is there any advice that you, yes you dear reader, could give that means I ask the right questions of prospective storers (many of whom seem to be farmers with an empty field to be honest).
Many thanks to anyone who A) revisits a 5 year old thread and B) responds!
Robert

Hi Robert, just a few things to think about, some storage facilities insist your caravan is CRIS registered which is another expense to be factored in. Also my simple logic would be, where do you holiday? If you spend time in Devon then why store the van in or near Harrogate, on the other hand if you spend holidays closer to home then somewhere nearer is the wise choice.
Some of these storage facilities offer tow on / off, and some even have facilities for you to wash and clean your pride and joy. The ability to turn up at 3am and pick up or drop off your van is also worth looking at, it might not seem important now but maybe in the future.
I feel sure your decision will be the right one and suit your needs

I agree totally and it's what got me banned initially from that "other place" I have caravanned most of my life, initially I was born in one and lived in it until I was 13, then a short break of 7 years, then from 20 until now at 61 in some form I have had a caravan, camper, motorhome. I have stayed on hundreds of differing sites across the continent, negotiated a "lot" of ferry crossings, and not once has anyone looked at or recorded my VIN.
Totally farsical and utterley useless that'll be CRIS then.

I agree that it's not worth the money you have to pay but unfortunately for us being cris registered was one of the conditions we had to meet for our storage compound. We are very near to being able to store doo-dah in Wales, on a caravan park that will give us 24hr access and the offer of having doods towed onto a pitch ready for our arrival if we choose to stay on their site.. This makes life a lot easier for us as to get to Wales at present puts an extra hour either way on our journey going to and from our present storage. We do spend a lot of our time in Wales so hopefully we will be able to get away lots more in the future. Ellen.

"front end loading" does this mean 'nose weight'?
sorry couldn't resist
there are a few storage areas around and about, most are advertised in the back of caravan mags, the ccc or cc do something but not really up on that knowledge.
could you rent a garage or lockup of correct dimensions for model choice to put eriba in?
for a short term solution find a few cls and park for up to 20 days before locating another cl
the site we visited last year near whitby had yearly pitches
think the max stay is on cl is 28days on one visit then must leave to restart
good luck

Dear Agger and Brian,
I based my assumption about the age of the thread on the date stamp top right on Ellen's inaugural message, which reads 2008. So my next actions are:
1. Go to Specsavers as advised... never a bad idea at my age.
2. Understand more about formats and tags on the forum. IT, gotta love it eh?
3. Apologise to Ellen for adding 5 years!!! There may be no way back for me on this last one of course...
:-)
