Replacing the centre end cabinet with seating

Hi there,

I'd like to replace the end centre cabinet (which has the build-in folding table) with seating cushions to give wrap around seating. I have a Hymer Feeling 430, which has the same internals as a Troll 540.

Has anyone retorpectively done this before? If so, any help would be gratefully received on where I can get the seating that will fit the gap and cushions that will be in keeping with the van.

I've had a general look on the internet and I've tried Hymer and Eriba websites to no avail. I'm sure it can be done as I understand the centre cabinet was an optional extra.

Chris, I'm afraid you will not be able to buy a solution, but will have to fabricate one yourself. Getting a match on the Pear or Cherry veneer would be very difficult, so I would go down the route of something light and neutral such as birch plywood. Finish this with a few thin coats of acrylic varnish. 12mm thickness would be fine with 25mm softwood battens glued in along edges for bracing etc. I'd be looking at breaking the area into two with a vertical panel so you would have a central support for cross timbers. On top of these sit another piece of plywood and you could then cover a piece of good quality upholstery foam with a fabric of your choice. Again I very much doubt you will get something original.

Please take lots of pictures as you might inspire others to do a similar job.

Hi Colin, thanks for your reply. I think it’s more simple than that. The end centre cabinet just lifts off. As you can see from the pictures, it looks like it’s set up to accept either the cabinet or the seating. I just need to retrospectively source the matching cushions, which is the tricky bit. Cheers, Chris

Well that one bit of luck. I don't know if it is possible to find a link here https://www.eriba.com/gb/en to ask Hymer if original fabric is available. I'd be tempted to accept it is not really probable and find something that looks in keeping instead.

Hi Colin, yes, I've tried a several UK Eriba dealers on the link you've shared. The only positive conversation I've had is about half an hour ago with 'Adventure Leisure Vehicles' in Tebay in the Lake District. They've asked me to send them some photos and VIN details. I'm hoping they can come up with something. Fingers crossed..... :-)
I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again for your help.
Chris

I have mixed feelings about the central cabinet it is very handy for storage and a place to put your brew. But it gets in the way if you sleep length ways in a single bed situation. You can give your head a nasty bang in the middle of the night when you are least expecting it. But us Eriba owners are used to banging the head.

We are going to take the cushion away with us this year and give it a go put the cupboard in the car a couple of nights see how we get on. Good luck with yours Morphy

Is that fabric like a faux suede? Some suppliers of this have samples for not a lot.

May be worth a try. If you cant get an exact match, it is usually better to go for a contrast.

Hi Morphy,
Did your van come with both the Cabinet and the Seating then? I'm the third owner of my Feeling, so wondering if the van was supplied with both, unless it was an either/or on purchase when it was new. You never know, if my Feeling was supplied with both when new, the seating might be in an attic somewhere....
Cheers

Yes came with both the cabinet was optional extra and as it happens that’s exactly where mine is at the moment in the loft.👍🏻

Thanks everyone for your responses. Unfortunately the previous owner didn't have them, so my search continues (at least for the moment or until I have a go at making something) :-)

IIRC the cushion pieces that are supplied with the cabinet option don't make a seat suitable for sitting, they're not deep enough and if you attempt anything deeper you prevent the bed from being pulled out as a double etc. The only real use for it is to make a much wider double bed, but as that's v wide, even with the cabinet in place, there's not much point. As to bashing your head, we always slept in singles/wide singles mode with head at the kitchen end, which meant the feet were at the cabinet end, so no bashing.

Yes Steamdriver we would probably do the same in fact we did in the last Troll. But unfortunately we like to watch a bit of tv just before going to sleep and the tv is sited on the side of the wardrobe which faces the cabinet end. We do swap about double bed length ways double bed side ways depends on how we feel that night. But if single beds then we lay that way, hey ho just one of them.

But with the 540 you have all those options which is why it suits us Morphy
