Draining hot water

Friends of our neighbours have just bought a 2018 430. They want to know how to drain the hot water system. We don’t have one and although I know it’s been discussed before I didn’t pay any attention because it wasn’t relevant to me 😲

Do you know if it is electric only or a gas/electric combi boiler?

Colin, apparently it’s electric.

This is an easy job then. Assuming you are going home and not onto another site, before you leave:-
- flip the 12v isolator switch near the bed
- open the kitchen/bathroom taps in the mid hot/cold position
- pull the bung out of the bottom of the onboard tank and open up the valve next to the tank, but NOT all the way until it will not open any further
- either side of the water heater you will find a pair of valves for hot and cold in and out, open these as above
- drive home with everything open as the movement will sort out any potential air locks
- when home some members put an inflated balloon over the taps to blow any remaining water out, but you could try a pump and an air awning pump and a bit of cycle innertube over the tap. I have not bothered.
- leave valves open over winter if you wish but put the bung back in the tank.

Thanks Colin, I’ve passed the information on to them. They don’t fancy the idea of Meets but I’m trying to persuade them to join the Forum if only for the invaluable technical help. They’ll be looking for an awning soon so there’s another whole can of worms 😁

hi Julie

I'm not suggesting that you try to frighten your friends but please feel free to use our example of not draining the taps thoroughly enough about three winters ago, and us ending up with a split inner tap on both the kitchen & bathroom sinks.

When I took the winter cover off and charged the water system ready to go away we got water all over the area near the door and over the bathroom sink area..

It cost over £200 to get the rascals replaced........................

It is worth spending that extra time to get whatever you can out of the taps. The balloon method seems to work for us......................(no rude sniggers please)

No rude sniggers from me. Before I heard of the balloon method I used to half climb on to the worktop to blow down the taps.
Definitely no comments, please 🤐

Hi Julie

I've just read this now and am processing the image

I might suggest to Kath tomorrow that she try to replicate the method.......but there again I might end up with a clip round the ear instead
