Has anyone had the Stone Chip Wrap applied to their Eriba?
Is it worthhaving it applied?
Thanks in advance

What stone chip wrap is that?

Is it vinyl with a picture of french fries on it?

Skoda fitted a clear vinyl wrap tot the front of the rear wheel arches on the Yeti. Earlier models suffered badly with stone chips whilst the later models with the wrap did not. It is effective, but I think the money would be better spent on large mud flaps.

Most modern vehicles have some clear patches of what is known as "Helicopter tape" on exposed bodywork such as wheel arches. This protects the paintwork from stone chips.

I don't know if you can get a big enough piece to cover the front of an Eriba though. If you can then I think it would be well worth doing, provided the cost wasn't prohibitive.

Sounds interesting but I suspect it would be no good on a bobble finish van which is a shame as ours wasn't fitted with stone deflectors.

Even my 430 does not have these front stone guards. I wanted to mount them but I have not found the spare part and the price.

They're listed on Eriba price lists and the number shown might also be the part number. Not sure how they're attached when factory fitted.

Knowing that dealership you can probably get a vinyl wrap specialist to do it for half that price.

You can get this stuff on the 'net.

Just have a rummage around on Amazon or Ebay for paint protection film. It's mostly sold in narrower strips than what you'd need (as in the link above), but people do sell it in wider sheets.

It's not difficult to apply - you just need patience.

The trick (apart from making sure that the area you're applying it to is scrupulously clean) is to make an accurate template first and then transfer this to the backing sheet of the film itself. One template should do, but reverse it and check carefully that it fits the panel on the other side; because it was put together by 'artisans' in dungarees rather than a team of precision robots on an assembly line there's no guarantee that the caravan will be symmetrical.

Once you're happy that the new sections you've cut from the film are the right size, make up a weak solution of clean water (preferably distilled, especially if your home water supply is hard) and washing up liquid in a spray bottle.

A couple or three of drops of washing up liquid will do. The washing up liquid is needed to break the surface tension of the water and add a bit of lubricant.

Use it to wet the panel on the caravan. I realise it'll run off, but you really can't use too much. Peel the backing paper off part of the film, and wet that too.

KEEP IT WET ALL THE TIME.

Once you've done that, you can begin to slide the film in to place, easing off the backing paper as you go. If you've kept it wet enough the adhesive will not grip, and you'll be able to slide the section of film around until it's in exactly the right place.

An extra pair of hands would help, obviously.

WET IT AGAIN. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT.

The film is stretchy enough to cope with moderate compound curves so you shouldn't get wrinkles.

Once you're happy that it's where you want it, use a squeegee like this to work the lubricating layer of water out and remove the bubbles.

KEEP EVERYTHING WET UNTIL YOU'RE DONE.

And that's it. Once the water is out, the adhesive will start to grab.

If you cock it up, the film will pull off before the adhesive has cured, but you probably won't be able to re-use that bit.

Buy enough film to allow for a couple of spare sections.

One other thing. If you do decide to have a bash at this (and you really won't lose much except your time if it all goes south), make sure the film you buy comes on a roll and not a folded sheet because the fold creases make extra work.

P.S. You REALLY cannot use enough of your water mix while you're doing this. I hope that came across okay.

.

A good mate of mine was a traditional sign writer who also did gold leaf. As times moved on he invested in a vinyl cutter as he could see the market changing. I was amazed at how resistant to wear the vinyl was . the local coffee shops had there windows done by him and even though washed most days still looked good 4 or 5 years later. One of the vinyls he used was suitable for foot traffic. He did the floor at the entrance to the local Debenhams. It lasted over 18 months before he needed to re-do it.
It is worth searching out a sign writer as well as a vinyl car wrap agent to get a comparison on priced. All this is immaterial though on a white bobbly van.

Could you give me the referral link? I didn't find them. Official price lists seem inaccessible to private individuals in our country. To order, ask the dealers and give the factory numbers.

Sorry, I forgot that Hymer redesigned the website last year and no longer show the price list and even more annoyingly they dropped the archive of previous brochures and price lists. If you can find the archive of info on the forum here that should help. Currently the stone guards list at £190 as a cost option on a new van or are part of the GT Pack. They weigh 2kg.
