While fitting supplementary fans to improve airflow I wondered why this bottom vent area is boxed in. I don’t remember this on previous vans and I’m thinking it must hinder the airflow behind the fridge.

If the top (which isn't in the pic) is open, that's all that's necessary. The airflow bottom to top is to take away air that has warmed as it passes over the heat exchanger at the back of the fridge and out the top vent. Sealing the bottom and sides stops water getting into the floorspace etc around the bottom of the fridge and rotting the frame/floor.

Tony, if that box section is 3-sided (and not open at its top) it should be located higher up, about halfway between the vents.
Its purpose is to direct airflow through the fridge cooling matrix - it's dropped to the floor and is now blocking airfow completely.

There should be four wooden dowels, two each side on the right and left-hand panels which the box mounts on.

The inside back corners of the box sits on two dowels and it's held against the wall between the vents with the other two.

It's a right faff to relocate it with the fridge in situ, but it can be done with a couple of grunts and some choice expletives.

You should be able to feel where the dowel or their holes are - the original dowels may not be around anymore.

Thank you John. There was a loose dowel as I removed the grill and the others are in situ. I thought it was strange!
I will try to keep the swearing quiet.

ps. Done it now and added an extra ‘stopper’ to hold it. The dowels were not glued in but they are now!
