I think it is more of an aesthetic value, the plastic yellows over time. It's also going to be harder to clean after a few years. Plastic absorbs colours that turn into stains.

Without lowering the tone too much, our toilet is 14 years old, used regularly and there is no yellowing or stains. I appreciate plastic doesn’t last for ever but how long is “over time”?

Yes, our 2005 toilet is still looking very white - unlike the basin and soap holders which had turned very yellow. I have now resprayed those to white again and all is once more in harmony... :-))
