How many members are CRiS Registered ?
The reason for creating this survey is because many folk are finding it more and more difficult to get Eriba Insurance without having their van CRiS registered (CRiS only applies to UK owned vans).
We are currently looking around for insurance quotes and are facing the fact that because our van is elderly (1999), companies don't wish to quote as it is more that 15 years old or, because it's newer that 1992 then they require CRiS registration which as many of you will know, costs around £75 because we have a "foreign" van with a VIN number sequence that doesn't fit the CRiS system.
I think CRiS is probably good for newer Eribas, hence the reason for asking the age of your van on the survey, but for older vans, which are eminently less desirable, it just another added expense.
If anyone wishes to comment below then please go ahead.

My previous 4 Eribas have not been CRIS registered. I have been sent details for my current Eriba and may consider it, only because it opens up a greater number of possible insurance companies.

One catch with CRIS. If you change your home address and send the form off like a good boy/girl, they don't send you a new document until you pay another £10. You remain registered but will probably need the document when you come to transfer to someone else on selling. We didnt bother when we moved in case we move again but I suppose I will have to give in and get a replacement document. Why can't it be like the car V5 ( which it appears to be based on)? It would also be useful to manage it on line rather than posting the form off and phoning up. Grrr.

I wish I wasn't so jaundiced about this kind of thing.
From the CRiS website. The bold bits are what they say...
CRiS Registration is important for many reasons including:
So what are the other reasons? You say there are many including these, so you must think there are quite a lot more.
Proves you are the registered keeper.
Registered where? Oh yes, on your register. Should have worked that one out.
Helps manufacturer product recalls and warranty.
I can't see that you'd suffer unduly without that help, but there you go.
It assists the police and enforcement agencies with identification and recovery.
What other 'enforcement agencies' are there? The only one I can think of that might conceivably fit that description is the DVLA, but since caravans don't need licenses - or need to be on a 'register' - it couldn't be them.
Many insurance companies require a CRiS registration document before processing a claim.
Yeah, but many don't. How many is many? Some? Several? A lot?
It helps to ease a potential future sale.
Dunno. When I buy something that costs this much dosh I'm not thinking about future sales; I'm thinking about enjoying the thing I've just spent a ton of money on.
It is a legal requirement to have a caravan registered in some countries.
But I don't live in some countries. I live in this one, where it isn't a legal requirement.
I can't help thinking that the only real reason that 'Many insurance companies require CRiS registration' is because someone else does a load of irksome admin for them and they don't have to do it themselves. You can imagine the conversation when a CRiS person rocks up at the insurance underwriters' AGM to tell them what a good wheeze this is.
It'll probably come back bite me in the arse some day, but I think this is in the same category as a twenty quid extended warranty on a toaster that cost twenty five.
Clever marketing that plays on people's anxieties to generate business.

It puts me in mind of the vehicle window etching kits that were so popular with car owners at about the same time that CRiS was created.
I wonder how many car owners still get it done to their cars and why are the Police not doing more to promote it ?
As I said before, it's not the £19.50 that I'd object to but I do object to paying almost 4 times as much for a foreign van and I also object to the fact that more and more Caravan Insurance Companies are insisting on getting it done AND not offering a discount for having it done.

Interesting survey so far. Thanks for your contributions.
What's really interesting is that of the 21 people who have contributed so far, only 18 of you own an Eriba

Not CRIS registered. I just insured my 2004 510GT with Frank Pickles through Compare The Market comparison. CTM search function does ask if you are CRIS registered yes/no to tailor the search but I still checked the paperwork before I purchased.
I read you should aim for approx £10 per £1k caravan value and it seems not far off. I have no caravan 'NCB'.

Interesting response so far. Only 4 are with CRiS.
We were asked the question by Caravan Guard yesterday when we phoned to confirm and pay for our new Insurance yet last week at the quoting stage they were happy to just go with a VIN number. They weren't insistent however.

I think the problem with UK insurance companies is that they assume all caravans are CRiS registered which they are if they were built in the UK post 1998.
CRiS registration is straightforward if you are the original owner, however I think it becomes a bit more involved when it is second hand with many owners. When I applied there was someone in the CRiS office that specialised with continental caravans to guide you through the process.
