40 years ago we used to spend our summer holiday with a lovely couple in Penzance. He was an osteopath and she physiotherapist. Both had a colourful past and hers included cars. I recall stories of her thrashing her Vitesse. She said she soon learnt to carry a couple of bags of sand in the boot to improve the grip.

A friend of mine had a Vitesse, he came down a local hill rather fast and there was a crack when it levelled out at the bottom. He opened the door when he got home and it wouldn't shut again till it was jacked up in the middle.

Negative camber in the rear wheels. What fun that was.

The story that I remember about my Herald is that I had to borrow the works van to take some heavy items to a site I was surveying so I left the Herald in the capable hands of the regular van driver who was also a friend, so he could take it home for me.

When I got back home he was shaking like a leaf as, when he drove it over a railway bridge on his journey home, the bonnet popped open. Now on a Herald that means the whole front end including front wings, hinges forward giving no view to the front at all.

The only benefit of that is that you could sit on the front wheels while you searched the engine for starting problems.

How times have changed..
My brother had a Herald. Remember the bonnet AND wings opened. Am I correct ? You could sit in on a deck chair and faff around with the engine. Speaking of which, I recall in the late 70's, sitting on the ground in my parents garden, mid winters evening, with a plug in hand lamp, changing ( trying to) the wheel bearings and CV Joints in a Mini Clubman. I still haven't thawed out.
Recently, I got a small ding on my car door and had to shop for days to find a repair shop that would even quote me for it. Not interested. Job too small.
A tiny paint chip: € 380.00 it cost from the one and only shop that would even offer a quote. We have morphed into a very affluent society.
