TO BE A DEVIL'S ADVOCATE.......

While answering a lady Eribafolk Member in distress on Facebook who last year bought a 1990 Eriba (Triton?) which has just been condemned by a Caravan service Engineer for amoungst other things, rust, it got me thinking.

Many members on here are of a certain age where we had our first cars in the 1960s, Moggies, Minis, Anglias, etc and if you were anything like me, you used to keep them "on the road" by patching up rust spots and even chassis and cill members by using off cuts of tin, pop rivets etc and a fair spreading of Isopon P40. Then a thick splash of underseal and away to go!

This practise was largely stopped by a more thorough MOT Testing Service but in the UK, caravans do not undergo a regular MOT so what's to stop somebody repairing the sub cills of an Eriba with gunk? After all, they are not main frame members like the T Pole Chassis. They just hold the floor and the side walls together.

There, I've said it rather tongue in cheek, but I do start to wonder how many Isoponed Classic Eribas there are out there?

Randa

Ps. I would never suggest that this should be done.

I think I bought a Triumph Herald off you in the 70's.

Roger,
I'm hoping and would imagine that "bodge job repairs" are fairly low in number. I base my assumption on the following. Let us assume:-
1/3rd of owners know exactly what state their Eriba is in and keep things in good order, so no problem here.
1/3rd of owners have not go a clue on what state the van is in underneath until they realise it is to late and the van is scrapped, so no problem there either.
1/3rd of owners have a vague idea of what is going on and I think these are the vans that are the potential problem.

So we are down to 1/3rd of owners. But then you have to consider we are looking at older Eribas, that did not enter the UK in large numbers as the number of UK dealers was limited in the 1980's. So really we are looking at few vans. Add into the equation most owners are not crooks and the number of vans must be very low.

Another thing to consider is we are probably looking at 8,000 owners across the forum and Facebook. When you consider this and the number of admittedly sad reports of sellers passing on dodgy vans things do not look so bad. When you look into the actual reports it would appear that on many occasions the new owners have not really shown common sense and looked at, or have somebody competent look at the 40 year old van.

Are things really all that bad?

We'll never know and perhaps we are better off not knowing

You should see the state of some vans over here. We were in Chinon one year and an old van appeared - you could see into the van via the gap between the front and the side panel. I couldn't understand how they'd managed to get there without it exploding LOL.

I'd have liked a rusty Puck to dismantle and see how the chassis could be repaired but the ones I have seen still go for too much money to experiment with. I have done plenty of car and trailer welding over the years including building a chassis and putting through the then SVA.

The actual welding isn't the problem, it's the stripping off/out of everything to get access. The aluminium skin frequently has to bee peeled out of the way or panels cut out. The insulated plywood floor also has to be removed, which could mean a full strip out of the caravans internals. When all of the repair work has been done it's all got to go back and parts of the van possibly re-skinned. These are not small or quick jobs and hence the high repair cost estimates owners often receive.

I think I might have ended up with Steve and Debbie's Triumph Herald attached by fibreglass and old chinese take away cartons to a Spitfire body in the mid 70s...

Cor, I wonder if that was the Spitfire I almost bought from some Geezer in Lancashire in the late 70s? I thought the bodywork looked familiar to a Herald I owned 7 years earlier

My stepdad had a Triumph Herald. Driving to work one day closely followed by a lorry he pulled up sharply at traffic lights and felt a jolt and jerked forward. Suspecting the lorry had hit him he got out only to find the lorry still a good couple of feet away the body had become completly detached from the chassis..... rust

It was Lancashire but I don't think I remember Chinese takeaways in the 70's. It was hand painted and the chassis rusted apart. My dodgy uncle got rid of it for me.

we had the triumph through yesterday look good yet refused to move off road, historic rally who not knew of putting 2 wheels verge to safely pass,

rust can be killed with a product brush on it blue and goes black when done its job, there is a laser that evaporates rust.
then paint over with that h paint name escapes me at moment have done mine twice for peace of mind, then copper greased the screws for front plastics so would come off again,

hammerite?
no point in bodgit and scarper they pull caravans at scotch corner and south of wetherby Tadcaster roundabout to inspect, however there is a rolling van that gv9 a truck in an tank layby in middle of nowhere.

if metal turned religious best to weld add in new metal many youtubes showing the process about 150 screws to remove if taking outskin off😣

there is chemical weld product thats stronger than box metal if has good bond, however it would not glue the fresh snapped lug on a starter motor, so failed new starter was purchased.
car filler absorbs water would speed up the rusting. so dont try that wasting your money and time.

My Dad had a Triumph Herald coupe it was a nice looking car but there wasn't much headroom in the back for me and my sister, we both hated travelling in it.

I'm shocked that no-one of an age has mentioned the beautiful but totally insane Triumph Herald Vitesse. I seem to remember it was a Triumph Herald with what was for the time an amazingly powerful engine from something else.

In a straight line the speed was thrilling but trying to take a corner in the wet at any type of speed was not recommended......! In 1969 I nearly came to an early end in the Lakes when the road went one way and the Vitesse chose to go another. My friend, whose dad had a large Ford Dealership, "borrowed" interesting cars from the forecourt and took them for a spin. The Vitesse had been p/xed for a Lotus Cortina and Ian wanted "to see what it could do". Fortunately he had started to learn how to rally and he managed somehow to rescue it but my side scraped down the old stone wall and the bodywork didn't look good...............his dad wasn't very pleased
