Experimenting (OK, faffing about) with awning pole repairs

On our Soplair awning three of the transverse roof poles have bayonet type lugs that secure them in place while erecting the awning. They should look like this:

The central apex pole which fits here:

looked like this:

(as you can see, the retaining lugs have broken off)

I've seen quite a few plastics repair videos on YouTube using a variety of materials with superglue including graphite and baking powder but for this application I thought cotton wool might work better. The method is to glue some cotton wool onto the piece that needs building up and then soak it thoroughly in superglue and leave it to harden. Once it has set it can be carved and filed to shape replicating the original features.

I put too much cotton wool on and my superglue, which really needs to be a freely flowing liquid, was instead a bit too thick for the job, hence the messy appearance.

Anyway, I marked out the shape with with a pen and then set to work with file and Stanley knife to carve out some new lugs. I know they aren't pretty but I've offered them up to the female sockets and they fit perfectly and are now unlikely to fall on our heads while we are putting the awning up. Mrs Calder was NOT amused when this happened to her on our recent holiday but couldn't stop laughing when I got clonked at the next campsite. Bloody women!

The proof of the pudding will come on our next trip, particularly if the weather is a bit stormy. I'll report back in due course.

If not successful try searching "Isabella 22mm Bayonet joint" on flebay, or go direct to Isabella at https://www.isabella.net/uk/accessories/...onx-zinox-1-pcs

Yes, we bought some a few years ago from https://www.penrosetouring.co.uk/isabell...bon-x-26mm.html

They do many other Isabella accessories as well although many are only sold Khaki in colour. Note that they sell Isabella Shadow locking pole joints too.

I need an Isabella Rafter Pole or two to help hold up my Shadow - and also, potentially, to provide me with something to hang a side panel from, but they certainly know how to charge for parts!! And, of course, you need the special connector piece for the top of each pole as well. I hadn't realised how lucky I was picking up a third vertical pole for peanuts back in the winter...
