I honestly wonder what the approach will be to this at ports and Eurotunnel. Just consider the total ban on taking meat and dairy from UK to Europe that has been in place since Brexit. Ehh.

Thanks for the heads up. We’re heading to the EU next week

Would anyone know if there are any issues taking dog food abroad with us? My wife thought she had read somewhere it might be an issue.

I believe you can, but cannot recall the quantities. Roger (Randa) will be along soon and give you a definitive answer. They take a cat with them.

Hi Iain.

We don't know if the ports will be more strict with outgoing journeys now because of the import bans but over the past several years since Bre**it we've "risked" taking a small amount of food and drink with us to see us through the first couple of days, especially on holiday weekend journeys.

Regarding the animals, we also take enough food for our our cat for at least a couple of days or so until we find a shop that sells out cat's preferred food.

We've become a bit blasé over the matter in recent years as we've never been taken to task over it although our car and Eriba are regularly searched (because we look like suspicious characters ) and we now consciously run our home fridge and freezer down in the weeks before we travel and always take what's left over, including any remaining food for the cat.

We must say that the rule is so stupid because probably just a week before we travel, much of that food has been imported by UK supermarkets anyway.

Thanks for your help and thoughts - we will do the same and take enough to do us a few days. Fingers crossed 🤞

We are sailing Newcastle to Amsterdam on Tuesday taking the van aboard for the first time.
Very excited and slightly nervous at the same time

Not done that crossing Iain but I'm sure you'll be fine. Just make sure that before you board the ferry you check your car and Eriba out for any illegal Geordies trying to smuggle themselves into the Netherlands

Amsterdam and the North Holland region are great and it's worth heading north a bit and crossing what used to be the Zider Zee into Friesland.

And disable the alarm in the car for the crossing or you may return to a flat battery!!

A good tip - one we always follow too. And not just on ferries - in 2012 we parked in an on-airfield car park at Heathrow for two weeks and came back to a flat battery; the chap who came out with a battery jump starter said that the planes set the alarms off when landing and taking off!

The worst is when people forget to do this on an overnight ferry and the monotonous blaring keeps people awake...
