Hi Dennis, I'm not sure if I can help but the piece of metal you descibe as flat on one end does it have a point on the other end?

I have a similar piece on our awning but we have only used it once in 8 years, so I am no expert.

If you get back I will try and help,

I have just attached a photo of the erection instructions for our awning, we have fibre poles but the one you describe is common to both metal and fibre poled versions for some reason.

I believe it is the part with CMB in letters next to it in the drawing. I hope that helps if not come back and I will try again

Welcome to the forum, Dennis.

I have a Soplair awning and it came with two lower extensions for the centre support, one with the flattened end that you describe and another with a spike.

These pieces fit into a short tube that has a triangular-shaped plastic piece at the top that supports the centre apex of the awning. My Triton has a central metal awning support at the centre of the awning rail into which the spike option locates so that's the one that I use.

Once the awning material has been threaded into the rail, I fit the spike into the hole and extend and clamp the assembly to support the centre of the awning. This photo should illustrate what I mean:

With the flattened end I think it fits into the awning rail and is then held in place once you tension the short upright. Does anyone know different? (There could be an alternative fitting for the awning rail that accepts the flattened end but if so I've never seen one.)

I am also attaching the Soplair diagram that shows the framework and the two alternative fittings.

I hope this helps.

PS the bits of guy rope and plastic tubing are there to prevent the poles jumping out of the awning rail brackets during erection and dismantling of the awning and scratching the van as they fall. I've done the same with the two hooked ends.

If you have a flattened end on the tube,it fits into an elongated slot that's the fitting fixed as an extra on the awning rail ( the other type is designed to use the short pole with a pin) Yours should not be fitted directly into the gutter/awning rail.

The pole will remain very " floppy" until the awning fabric is fitted and the roof rails tightened - this is normal!

I write this sitting in my awning, looking at the fitting which is the same as yours!

Hi Dennis. Thank you for joining Eribafolk. You are very welcome.
This sounds like the same method of holding the centre pole as we have with our Clairval awning. I believe another forum member, Aaron Calder, has taken a photograph of ours while we were with him last weekend and will post that photograph when he returns home.
We agree that when you first slot the flattened bottom end of the pole into the slotted bracket it does wobble around a bit. However, as you start to adjust the lengths of each of the awning poles this movement disappears.

Randa

This is the picture that Roger is referring to, Dennis.

But Roger and Amanda's van is a Troll which is a bit different to the Pucks that I saw this weekend. I didn't know that the Puck has two rails, a higher one into which the awning cord threads and a lower one into which the central support fitting fixes.

On one newish Puck L with a Soplair awning, they had simply rested the flattened piece in the lower rail and the tension retained in place. The other older Puck, however, had a fitting like Roger's attached to the lower rail.

Hope this helps.
