Hello Hetty and welcome to Eribafolk.

There's been some discussion on here recently about fridge problems and we are sure someone will come along soon and try to help with your problems.

I had a similar problem on gas with my older van, what I did was to wait for the flame to be lit for a while before removing my finger from the button, this seemed to warm something up and it stayed alight, as for the electric side, sorry can't help.

and despite this I hope you enjoy your time away

Welcome, Hetty.

The problem with the fridge electrics could be a defective 240v heater element. I haven't replaced one myself (yet) but understand that it's not a difficult job.

So far as the gas is concerned, creepy crawly things, rust and soot can get into the gas jet partially blocking it and although the flame is igniting, it may not be strong enough to heat the thermocouple that allows the gas to continue to flow. You could try keeping your finger on the button for longer than recommended to see if that does the trick.

Once you get the flame lit make sure that the fridge is level as the older ones can be quite sensitive to being tilted.

If you do have occasion to remove the fridge for maintenance, it might be a good idea to turn it upside down and to leave it like that for 24 hours before refitting it to remove any airlocks from the refrigerant.

To summarise, my inclination would be to give the jet a thorough cleaning and if necessary to try another thermocouple and also to fit a new 240v heating element.

Probably best though to consult a qualified caravan engineer and get an estimate.

Hope this helps.

No not as yet Tony. We've got someone coming to look at it in a few weeks (busy time for Service Engineers)

Hetty. We had a 240V fridge problem earlier this year but unlike yours, ours didn't fuse our electrics. Yet to be sorted.
However, when we tried it on gas it was an absolute bu**er to light on every occasion. It sometimes took us up to 10 minutes to convert the spark into a flame but after keeping the button depressed for about 30-45 seconds on high gas/ignite position before releasing, the fridge worked OK. After about an hour on high we were able to turn it down to medium although we were in a hot climate.

and hello

we always light the hob first before fridge or fire (after a journey), it seems to pull the gas through getting rid of air in pipes, plus the kettle boils enabling a nice cuppa

behind the outside grills you could access the burner area to vacuum any critters
although I have never had to do this.

Eriba troll 540 likes constant hugs, and buffs and the odd cuppa.

Hello Hetty, I won't add any to the above as it covers most things I have had problems with.

Nice to have you along.

Thanks for the replies. Held the button in for over 10 mins n still no joy. Looks like a professional job :-( cant really afford but can't risk anything with gas.

If it is that, it can be blown out with a tin of compressed air (tyre inflator) I've seen it done but can't tell you how, but I'm sure it'll be easy to find on google or youtube
