Reversing brake on 81 Puck

So I have got my little old Puck, and brought it home, hooray! (Thanks for all the towing tips…I was fine!)

But when I tried to reverse it onto the drive, I couldn't deactivate the brake, boooo.

The problem was that the slot on the draw bar where the lever goes wasn't showing fully, so it was impossible to push the lever into it. Luckily someone was around to help me manually push it onto the drive, and, as luck would have it, when I looked again now the slot is fully open.

Does anyone know if there is a there a knack to operating this when reversing? Or anything I can do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Cheers

Pull forward a bit to extend the drawbar then you need to fit the lever (arrowed)into the piece marked with the red blob and hold it there (its spring loaded) ......................if on your own a bungee or similar will do it ............this stops the drawbar compressing and applying the brake later models have an anti-lock reversing mechanism

Yes very interesting. Now I understand what my Uncle was on about when he once told me that many years ago he forgot to insert the pin before reversing his van (don't know brand/model) into his allocated space. By the time he remembered he'd burnt out the clutch on his Mitsubishi.

As I understand it the slow speed when reversing disengages the brake on later models .........I may be wrong ??

Thanks guys. Mine is older than these I think...the lever's on the top. I'll try to take a pic tomorrow. :-)

Many years ago we were forever having the problem with our Bluebird caravan. Eventually I found it easier to cut a piece of 4" x 1" timber to a length to fit on top of the bellows when they were fully extended. By wedging the timber between the back of the hitch and the front of the bar ( on top of the bellows), it stopped the bellows concertinaing and forcing the brake on.
Don't know if it would work with an Eriba though; it depends on whether there's a suitable ledge to prop the timber into.

For future reference the method shown in my previous post was for a 1989 Puck

Some of the older caravans also had a wide spacer spring clip attached by chain that used to be placed on the extended drawbar to stop it engaging the brakes when reversing, not sure if Eriba's adopted this method at any point
