photo's on tv

Did you take some good photo's while away in the Eriba? maybe a few vids..............Want to see youtube on a bigger screen than your monitor\laptop\tablet has? one with a better quality screen?

Well unless your TV and computer\laptop\tablet was made before the advent of HDMI sockets and HD TV its quite easy to do
I first did my home setup then linked my brothers laptop to his tv then did the same with my laptop and the tv I take in the Eriba.

I should also add at this point that all 3 computers that I have done this to are new enough to be running Windows 8 (now updated to 8.1) other operating systems may not be so easy to do................................

Anyway there are articles to be found on line to do that with other systems

All I needed to do was buy an HDMI lead long enough to connect the 2 devices and using the tv remote select which HDMI socket to view input from
And there was my pc\laptop screen reproduced on the TV (the pc\laptop may need to auto install some software but I did nothing)

Both laptops also automatically transferred sound to the TV but my desktop needs me to go to ............control panel .......sound and select where the default sound comes from ..................(having 5.1 digital sound on the desktop I don't bother)

P1320650.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) computer on my TV at home

P1320116.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) this shows my computer screen both on my laptop in the Eriba and on the TV

Ok so I'm playing games in the last image but if your laptop has a dvd drive and software to run dvd movies you can watch films on your tv without taking a dvd player with you (unless the tv has a dvd player built in)

To sum up ......................viewing photo's and editing them is greatly enhanced when doing it on an hd tv of decent size as is watching things like youtube

This may save space not taking a dvd player with you in the van

HDMI leads are not that expensive when compared to the cost ov a dvd player

The quality of a decent hd tv is hugely better than the average desktop \ laptop monitor

Edit
Forgot to mention that in my experience lots of camp-sites have little or no tv reception and unless you take a satellite dish and satellite box with you most of the free view channels are cr*p anyway

Hi I just had to bump this topic after watching some youtube video's containing reviews and tutorials for a new camera I'm thinking about buying to replace my 8 year old Panasonic lumix camera.
The difference between my desktop computer screen quality and my HD TV is amazing I have things set so both are on at the same time so i can compare .............its similar to the difference between the old 625 line TV and HD quality

I only ever use the monitor screen now if I want to watch TV at the same time

We (at least I do) spend a lot of money on a great display screen (called an HD TV) then spend a lot of time in front of a poorer quality computer monitor or laptop screen

For the sake of an HDMI lead costing a few quid things can look a lot better (there is little point in watching video on camera reviews on a pc screen as it can't resolve the images well enough anyway)

So if your computer is up to date enough to have an HDMI socket or a graphics card with one try it and see the difference.

Also all my music is now on the pc in mp3 format and if I make the TV default in control panel for sound I can play them through my connected HI FI
I'm way behind the curve on modern tech these days ( I don't even have a crap phone ............never mind a smart one) and a dongle was something else when I grew up so it can'd be that hard to do if I can do it

No need for the tv table this weekend but yes I still make the bigger bed at the back.................I take it down when travelling as I don't trust the table being upright on 2 snaps while in motion so I re-instate the table before hitting the road.

OK up to a point as long as you keep in mind that you are comparing apples with oranges. There is a vast difference in the quality of a good stand-alone PC monitor purchased along with a not unreasonably priced calibration device when compared to a Laptop screen which, unless one of the high-end apple jobbies, should never be used for photo editing. The only true way of comparing the 'truness' of colour presentation between a TV and a PC monitor is to ensure that both are able to be calibrated and in the case of the former, these are few and far between and mega expensive.

Would the camera you are considering be the Panasonic FZ200 by any chance? If so then you might want to consider subscribing to Graham Houghton's YT Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPfe6kkX-LqgAovxwxHQXdQ in which he provides reviews of just about everything under the sun LOL following hours of testing whilst also submitting tutorials - an entire series of which is dedicated to the FZ200. I've had one for several months now and have used it to shoot several thousand still images along with several videos. It was purchased for those occasions where the lugging around of my Canon 7D along with several grey lenses would be either impractical and/or cumbersome. Bearing in mind the extremely small sensor in the FZ200 and the zoom range it covers the resultant images are really quite good although a long way short of the images produced with the 7D or from most mid range dSLR's for that matter. I have found no real difference in quality when shooting in RAW format (my favourite format of choice) or in JPEG even after editing in ACR (Photoshop and Lightroom) and so now have the camera firmly fixed in JPEG mode. I also find the camera to over expose somewhat in anything but perfect light although the camera does provide tools to compensate for this, and it also produces quite noisy images under the same conditions. In fact, after quickly reviewing a thousand or so images yesterday taken during a recent Yorkshire Dales visit, in scenes that we have the typical blue sky and good lighting the resultant images are quite pleasing. On slightly duller days, however, which thankfully were few and far between (we were lucky) the resultant images are extremely noisy and I shall consider converting some of the better ones to black and white where this noise will then appear as film grain.

Of course if you are just a 'happy snapper' (nothing derogatory intended here), and don't like/intend to spend hours in front of a PC editing then non of the above will concern you too much I guess. I on the other hand have an expensive monitor (calibrated of course) and edit away like fury. I mention this because when I pass some of the finished images over to the OH for inclusion in the photo album that she likes to knock up after every holiday, when they come back from the corner shop printers they look nothing like the original. Only when the are sent to a professional printing service (at cost) where their machines are regulary calibrated and 'clean' printing ink used, are they returned as an accurate reflection of the original.

Edit: You'll also find additional information regarding the FZ200 on Graham's Blog http://www.grahamhoughton.com/fz200-specific-pages/ along with a very useful eBook User Manual in PDF format http://www.grahamhoughton.com/download-section/

Thanks I have already spent a lot of time watching Graham Houghton his video's on youtube are excellent and I downloaded his book yesterday. The point of connecting to a TV screen is to save the expense of buying a top end monitor when the TV will do the job

If you're still mulling over the idea of a Panasonic DMC-FZ200 here's an image shot at 1/400sec @f/4 and a focal length of 105mm - and a video shot in MP4 format. In both instances, these were shot during a recent visit to the Yorkshire Dales (the image at the Muker show and the video at the 1940s Weekend held at the Emsay & Bolton Abbey Railway Station) and are straight out of the camera i.e. unedited. Kindly keep in mind though, that there is obviously some video compression applied by YouTube thereby reducing the quality slightly, and I've no idea what the forum software does to still images.

In the case of the still image, click to enlarge and then click again to zoom in. Take a look at the green shaded section to the right of his left ear (right side of the image as you look at it lol). The motley effect is noise and to which I was referring in an earlier post. This would obviously be correctable in software but one effect of reducing noise is to soften (reduce sharpness) of the image slightly so it's all a balancing act really.

Many thanks for that ..........I bought a load of Nikon equipment in 2008 to photograph my plants and never really got on with it as I had hoped so its lived in a cupboard almost ever since.
Yesterday I packed it all in some bags and took it to Norwich and sold it and came home with an FZ200 and some cash as well The price has come down a good bit since the FZ1000 came out so now they are a good camera for the money.

Now all I have to do is get used to the different features and controls as compared to my trusty old FZ50 which I have had for 7 years and taken many thousands of pictures with.
I keep fumbling for the zoom ring that is no longer there and the on/off switch which is now on the side of the mode dial instead of being separate

No doubt I will get used to it in time and the FZ50 is still a good camera but with little financial value so I can take it to places like steam rallies and not worry too much about it being stolen or damaged.

I'm mainly a point and shoot merchant so most of the time the new one will be set to IA mode and full image size and resized for web use and little else ..........but I do enjoy taking pictures and rarely go anywhere without a camera of some sort.

I'm sure you'll have fun with it. I'm more often than not out and about with my trusty Canon 7D and a bag full of white lenses but for the Dales trip with the anticipated rain (that never actually came) during Hiking days out, along with everything else that one needs when out in the sticks lol, a full blown dSLR is quite simply too heavy and also takes up valuable rucksack space hence the search for something smaller and lighter but also able to produce acceptable images. The FZ200 was the final weapon of choice and I'm sure that it'll be called into action again before our next Dales trip. Yes, she who must be obeyed has already got it into her head that we'll be off there again in 2015.

Yes, was somewhat surprised not to have heard further from you following the initial SMS although to be honest we spent so little time at the campsite (essentially returning only to sleep) that meeting up might have proved difficult. But who knows, we might manage a pub meet next year lol.

@hob
Meant to add in my earlier post that one thing you'll come to hate about the FZ200 is the annoying habit you'll have of accidentally pressing the control button with the soft part of your hand under the thumb. If possible try and adopt a different way of holding the camera (especially with the right hand) as you would with a normal camera right from the start. Graham posted a video a while back showing how he had cut and fitted a ring to go outside of the button to alleviate this problem although you might already have come across it.

Yes I saw that, something to think about as I get used to using it.
