Battery charger "humming" noise
Battery charger "humming" noise

Just traded in my very basic 1991 Troll for a 2008 Troll 540GT and when plugging into mains there is a humming noise in the battery area which is annoying at night. I assume its the battery charger and wondered if this can be switched off or a switch installed.

Have you checked to make sure the fitments are tight? and not resonating? Just a thought, I have a cover on my fuzes that is taped specifically to stop this type of noise

It probably comes from 'loose windings on the mains transformer' in the charging system. Not a problem, but annoying I agree. My system makes this noise when charging a battery if it is a bit low on charge - however since I keep the system on most of the time, maintaining full charge when laid-up, I no longer get the 'hum' !
You should, of course, follow Agger's advice and check security of all the fitments :)
Hope it goes away :)

That's interesting information Martin.
From what you are saying, once the battery is fully charged then the noise will stop (presumably because the battery charger has shut down), so, would it be fair to say that if it continues then the battery could be u.s.?
Incidentally, we've never experienced the noise described in our Troll.

I'm assuming that whilst the battery is fully charged it will continue to 'trickle - charge' rather than shut down - thus only a very small current is flowing, but when a full charge rate is required, heavier current flow causes the 'transformer windings' to chatter, maybe because they're getting hotter as more current flows ?
This is only surmise from my point of view ! !
It is possible that the battery never reaches 'full' so the heavier current continues all the time. A battery charge check would answer this. I suppose disconnecting the battery, stopping the current flow, would indicate if the noise is caused by the charging current flow ?
I have to say that these are only my own ideas - don't take it as fact !!!!!
Any more ideas any one !

Humming is coming from charger as noise changes when placing my hand firmly on top. Charger is a SCHAUDT LA1210 and wiring also goes to a little box labelled JQX - 10FH. The charger has removable + and - red and blue leads and the little box has a yellow switch on the top. Tempted to try pulling / switching but hope to receive more info beforehand. I will try and download pics !

Hi Bilko, I can't help you with this I'm afraid because our Troll has an entirely different charging system to the norm. Presumably, yours will look a lot like other member's set ups.
While we are waiting for confirmation though, I've been reading about charger unit humming on various "wobbly box" caravan forums and it does seem to be normal. What a number of people have suggested is to unbolt the unit and sit it onto a rubber mat, then use rubber washers when re-fitting it, "to stop it resonating and using the floor as a sound box".

Hi Randa, After removing the cover and unscrewing unit from floor there is hardly any noise. I will try using strips of door rubber draught excluder to isolate from floor and consider leaving cover off. Ta.

Halfords do boxes of assorted grommets, and they're always handy to have.

Another thought - instead of screws, using the strong thick double sided tape for fixing number plates as sold in Halfords.
If you start with double-sided tape and that doesn't work, you'll have a gooey mess to clean off.
If your first grommet experiment is less successful than you (or we) hoped, you can try fatter ones. On longer screws, if necessary.
If you're concerned about the screws transmitting the resonance, use a smaller grommet as a washer under the screw head before passing it through the mounting holes and then use another fatter one between the bottom of the unit and the floor. That way the screw isn't in rigid contact with the unit at all.
