Who's a TV Techie?

Are there any TV Techies out there?
This afternoon I surfed the internet and found that the area of mid Wales we are in is surrounded with a choice of TV mast relay stations but no matter which way I pointed the aerial, I could not pick up a signal.
Not to be beaten and noticing that one or two aerials on adjacent caravans, although pointing in various directions, had their fin orientation turned through 90 degrees to ours.
We've had our aerial for 4 years and it has always been of the fin orientation shown in picture 1 which was the way the aerial supplier recommended and we've always managed to get a good reception.
However, I've just re-orientated the aerial fins as in picture 2 and lo and behold, we have about 20 channels.
Is this sometimes the case or did some geezer just switch on the relay station I was pointing at....

I have had this before too Roger although with a different aerial. The last time, we blamed it on the awful weather around at the time and there were times when it got seriously flaky for a few mins then back to OK.

You will find that the transmitters broadcast in either vertical or horizontal polarity. I am not an expert but if you google for the local transmitters you will find which are V and which are H.

Of course you know what an 'expert' really is............

I was at wenslydale CC site and a gentleman stopped to talk, he said he had been trying for days to get a signal and he had his aerial pointing the same way as mine, that's funny I said I've been looking at your aerial and I've been trying for days as well.....

So now you know mate. You have to check your horizontal and vertical polarity

Polarity ! I think main transmitters are Horizontal Polarity - Relay transmitters are Vertical Polarity (or thats how it used to be ! ) So all you need to know is : if the signal comes from a Main or Relay transmitter (?) I suppose the easiest way to find this out is to look at the local houses - if there are any !

Yes but not totally, TV can be useful. We are both into reeading. Carole has been for ever and I am now since my hospital stay. Currently American crime novels like Childs, Connelly and Parker.

Now your bound to say that seeing as your favourite camp site is tele-less Exe Valley....
...and isn't that rather a contradiction of terms, a "good book" and "Kindle"?
Seriously though, we only use the tele in the autumn what with the dark, rainy evenings. The rest of the time it's reading until dark and then a good film on DVD with a cheap bottle of wine.
