German sense of humour

Who was it said that the Germans don't have a sense of humour. I took our Triton in for it's annual service/water test earlier today and whilst there noticed this Bürstner that was also in for a service. The pitting you see was caused by Hailstones and the owner has affixed a sticker saying "Hailstone Edition 2013" . If this had happened to our van I'd have been in tears although this owner might well have been at the initial onslaught of hail.
On a more serious note - regions bordering towards the Eastern side of the Black Forest are prone to very severe hailstone storms at least twice a year which as you can imagine causes billions of Euros in damage. Sometimes these hailstones can be as large as tennis balls with the odd ones as large as a football. So if travelling through Germany on your way down south and the sky starts to get very black for goodness sake take cover i.e. pull in for some fuel and hang around a bit.

Some years back I attended a major electronics fair in Dusseldorf. A colleague of mine offered to pick me up at Munich Airport and share his apartment during my stay.
He had recently bought a new top of the range VW Scirocco in red and when he collected me from Airport we headed towards his apartment stopping on the way for fuel.
I happened to get out of car to stretch my legs while he filled up and noticed hundreds of small dents in his roof. When I asked him about this he told me that a week after collecting the car from VW there was a tremendous thunderstorm with hailstones one evening. The hailstones were golf-ball size. He had to keep the car outside in a car lot and hence the dents.
As it was "an act of god" the insurance would not cover the damage.
So yes if in doubt................take cover.

Trawling Mobile.de looking for a bargains motorhomes or caravans that look exceptionally cheap may often have hagelschaden in the description. Hail damage must be a regular problem for them.

Yes it is but the guy used to scare the pants off me when driving up autobahn at 140mph while taking a call on a car mobile from USA at same time
A true lunatic however he still with us so maybe slowed down abit since then
Did you mean to type 140km/h as 140mph equates to over 225km/h and it would take a real lunatic indeed to travel at that speed? In fact as a passenger in that car I'd probably have asked him to pull up whilst I got out.

Yes indeed. When we first started looking for our Triton late last year we saw quite a few vans being offered at reduced prices at a dealership not a million miles away from us. They were quite open about the price reduction stating from the outset that the vans had suffered hailstone damage but we thought we'd pop along in any event and take a look-see. However, the price reduction was nothing like good enough to even tempt us into buying a damaged van so they may well be still standing on the dealers forecourt for all I know lol.
Anyway, here's an example of why one should take cover:
