hoping for some info regarding
feeding a wooden box which has thin wood veneer on, the wood veneer looks dry and does need attention before a crack occurs
questions are what to use
the box is about the time of something called shellac
but where do you find shellac, how do you apply or is there something else that could be used
realise a bit of a long shot but we have veneers on eribas so worth asking

I think shellac is a linseed base. I have a decorating book listing it so will dig it out for you.

Isn't shellac a part of what's called 'French polishing' ? It takes a lot of skill to apply and get a smooth surface. It'll seal wood as it's sort of varnish, but it won't 'nourish' it. Best idea is to find a French polisher who'll be able to advise, if they still exist in these days of plastic and polyurethane finishes.

Shellac can be obtained from any good decorators suppliers eg Brewers.

many thanks eribanut
just done a search and located this info
http://furniturerepair.net/tips.htm
http://www.lapada.org/p/advice-%26-infor...iques/furniture
http://www.lapada.org/p/advice-%26-infor...iques/furniture

a short version is
seems the finish needs updating and nourishing does not happen because the finish seal the wood,
wax is better and the sprays do something different

shellac is not mentioned but perhaps because that was the finish should re use in the wooden box case.

so next will be the preparation and application issue

I guess anything is possible I use carnauba and have done for a long time, with no problems, we have solid wood furniture and it looks good after many years
