Insurance

Me again

I think I will need two kinds of insurance -

- basic caravan insurance, which I can't seem to do until I have finalised storage location and wheelclamps, but I would welcome any recommendations

- overseas travel, where it seems to me many people think Red Pennant is the way to go. As we will hopefully be away for 2 months in January and another month or so at the end of the year it looks like the annual version will be required. ADAC (recovery only) also has some positive remarks, but I understand they are not accepting new customers?

Am I on the right lines? Thank you for your patience..... I promise one I have some experience to pass on I will do so!

Hi Shirley. That's the way we do it. We have our Eriba insured through the AA with Towergate but we hear that Saga is also good.
However, for our long trips abroad, we use Red Pennant. The main reason why many people use them is that they will repatriate both van and car even if the car is well away from the van if it breaks down. We also use them for personal cover as well.
Up until now we have only used the single (longer trip) insurance but we are currently looking at the annual version for next year as, like you, we are hoping to go twice next year. What we notice though is that the annual insurance trip lengths are 31, 45 or 66 day maximums so as far as we can see, if our first trip is to be for two months then the annual maximum 66 day insurance is the one we'll need.

You're question has got us thinking Shirley.
Because our car and Eriba have always been insured to cover us for the UK and abroad at no extra cost, we have only ever considered the Red Pennant insurance as a breakdown and recovery service as well as a personal health insurance.
Is that how others see it?

Well that's certainly how I saw it.
We have only ever had the single trip version in the past but will be checking out the annual policy for next year as we will be doing more than one trip.

Hi everyone

We had hoped to be on our way south by now but we have had lingering chest infections (there's a lot of it about) and are only now recovering. We are hoping to be able set off heading for Spain next week. That's the joy of caravanning (and retirement) - flexibility!

I have checked my car and caravan insurance and find we are covered (admittedly separately) for Europe. The bank give us travel insurance. So I guess the only thing not covered for is a traumatic accident that leaves us unable to drive the car/Eriba back home.........is that how you all see it?

Having looked on the internet, it's all a bit of a minefield!

Yes, if it's like the majority of car or caravan insurances, you'll probably find that you won't have breakdown cover. Although the AA, RAC, Green Flag etc can offer you European breakdown cover and possibly repatriation of the car, I'm not sure how you'd be fixed for the Eriba.
Also, if you are able to get separate breakdown/repatriation for the Eriba, you may be faced with the problem that if you have a car breakdown away from the Eriba, then they probably won't put the two back together and bring them both home.
We had a serious trailer breakdown (pre-Eriba) in France, and although it was covered by Green Flag, they wanted nothing to do with it as we had managed to limp to a local garage from where we had to scrap it and purchase a new French trailer to replace it.
The only company we have found who have declared in writing that both car and van WILL be repatriated even if not together at the time of breakdown, is Red Pennant (part of the Caravan Club). Not cheap however.

I told Pete the other day that SAGA will do new for old for 15 years,
I don't know all the details but I expect it is for caravans under 5 years old.

Not cheap at all - I'm being quoted £470 for a year multiple trips up to 66 days with Red Pennant. Trying to decide whether to self insure....

Hi Rodders,

We've just insured Marmite through Saga on new for old basis and she will be eight on 25th Jan. Saga seem to have altered their terms for new for old cover they used to only offer it on vans under five and vans over five years old which were already insured with them. I know I wasn't able to get cover with them last year but they have come in this year at £209 Less than like for like cover with the Caravan Club.

Happy New Year to you and the Lioness

Though I never met your rescued stray one-eyed cat, Rod, I'm so sorry to hear he died. Our two died in my arms, one after the other, and I was heartbroken each time.

Having said that, he's chosen my favoured way to depart. If you have to go – and we all must – I can't think of a better end. For me it would be on top of the South Downs, and your back garden is probably his version of the Downs.

Yes, we only buy single trips as we are away for more than 66 days. It's costing us £265 this year and of course, that doesn't include Caravan Club Membership.
That's for motoring and personal cover. A lot of very good cover but you would think there would be something cheaper around, wouldn't you?

We paid £256.50 for Red Pennant annual cover (31 nights maximum per trip) in August 2014. Multiple longer stays are bound to be more expensive.
