French Wall Art

Mrs R found the following link today so I though it would be nice to share it with you:- Patrick Commecy
It follows on from many family discussions we have about how open minded the French are about their public art. We have seen ancient buildings and even whole towns/cities, dedicated to promoting many forms of art.
Perhaps the most spectacular one we were lucky to see recently was where artist Felice Varini was commissioned to temporarily paint the town of Salon de Provence, red.

A few years ago, we had the pleasure of discovering the large amount of wall art that can be found around the city of Lyon. Photographs don't do it justice. Here are just a few examples:-

The Murals of Lyon
If you've not visited Lyon, it's a fabulous city, not only for the wall art but also the new centre, the medieval streets and hidden passageways and of course, the Cathedral overlooking the two rivers.

Just been studying them.......................trouble is, I'm having great difficulty sorting what is real, from what is painted.
I can think of a few places in this country that would benefit from this sort of make over.......but, being the cynic I am, and living in a land of
vandal type culture, it wouldn't be long before some twit decided he/she could do better.
Its lovely to see though. Ian.

It's nearly all painted. For example. the facade of the large building with the crane above it is totally flat, the only openings being the several small black rectangles which are real windows.
What's amazing is that the perspective works even when you get up close.

It is a shame that our home bred spray can kids cannot produce such amazing works of art.
The exception is Banksy of course.

And what happens to some of his masterpieces? They get nicked of course and then openly auctioned off ....
We can't believe the amount of art especially metal sculptures that adorn the streets of many European towns and cities. However, put a decent lump of metal any where in the UK and it's gone at the blink of an eye. The only reason the Angel of the North is still there is because they can't find a Transit van big enough to carry it away.

I'm not knocking them at all - they are ace - but almost all the photographs are unsurprisingly taken from the only place where the perspective really works properly.
They're a lot more impressive than those trompe l'oeil pavement creations which, though dead clever, don't work at all from anywhere other than one very specific viewpoint.
We could do with some decent murals in this country. It isn't for the lack of people talented enough to do it; it's the petty and narrow-minded attitude of a bureaucracy totally bereft of any kind of imagination and still mired somewhere in the nineteenth century.
