I came across this handy little micrometer
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vktech-Portable-...tech+micrometer
now you can measure the size of that wire or drill bit,
even the thickness of a fag paper.

What a ridiculous price. Gone are the days when one would guard their vernier and micrometer with their life because of the cost and the worry that someone else would borrow it and bug**r it up.

I'd go for one like this meself.

A lot more robust and you can do inside measurements as well.

I know yours is marginally more handy, but it's not the kind of thing which gets so much use that the extra bit of handiness outweighs the steel one's advantages.

In my very humble opinion, of course.

We've each still got our analogue ones and woe betide anyone else we catch using them. I seem to remember that they cost megabucks at the time.
Always preferred a ball ended micrometer and, as Pete says, a micrometer can't measure inside dimensions whereas a vernier can.

I've still got my old micrometers too, not that I ever use them these days. And a one-inch calibration disc as well. I do use my verniers though, every now and then; as has already been said, the ability to do inside measurements (as well as depths) makes the vernier more versatile even while it's a tad less robust than a straightforward mike. I do tend to use the digital version more often, if only because it's a damn sight easier to read with varifocals.

I just thought that for the money the less mechanically minded
could measure 'O' rings and stuff.
The steel digital Verniers are obviously more useful (small 'G' cramps?)
I three plus micrometers, I even had bore micrometers (until I gave them back)
