Grp and fibreglass roof shine? Which uv protectant product?
Grp and fibreglass roof shine? Which uv protectant product?

After trying out various products to clean the GRP roof, I have the job to do again from the compounding stage
Having used rubbing compound made by car plan, I found it hard going (but not as bad as the Tcut episode, don't use t'cut on the roof)
Has anyone used a bilt hamber clay bar (this I think is the only one you don't need to buy a lube to use with, it uses water instead)
My past shining episodes used
Bosun polish but this didn't last long and a shine was hard work
autoglym this has silicone in so stopped using (silicone and GRP not good) the content was listed in a magazine which is how I was aware.
meguires carnauba no 4 this cause the roof to be shiny but only lasted 2 to 3 weeks
303, designed for grp fibre glass, has a uv deterrent but is not easy to apply, and again only lasts a month
I would like a protectant with UV additive that doesn't need excessive rubbing and wiping off for a gloss(hehehe ) shine
Polish without uv additive actually speeds up the aging process ie chalking bubbling possible cracks, if the 303 info was to be believed.
well most of us has experienced chalking or surface dulling
Has anyone tried this and can give their experience.

a polishing machine in my case isn't an option I can handle.

Protec Cover? Large Straw hat?
You can polish away the soft Gel-Coat, it is less than 1mm thick
I would cover the roof when not in use, there are roof caps on the market.

Um - but didn't I read on here somewhere that Autoglym was to be recommended for the GRP roof whilst the Carnauba was recommended for the main body? I went and bought some Autoglym on that advice although I haven't got around to using it yet?

Auto Glym is anti UV apparently and I used it on the roof,
Harley carnauba wax for the sides.
Seriously though keeping the roof covered is the best solution

HD wax may have silicone in it, but Super Resin Polish is recommended for fibreglass by Autoglym themselves. It's on the FAQ bit of their website.
I doubt they'd say that if they knew there was an issue with GRP gel coat.

And as the Autoglym product is a polish, the roof still needs to be waxed after use.
I use Collinite 476S 'cos that's what I use on the car. It was top of Auto Express test rankings for a couple of years but it has dropped down the ratings faster than I can use it up.
Whatever you do, don't go down the bodywork 'detailing' route or you will spend more time faffing about with the outside of your caravan than you do using it. It's a caravan, not a fetish object.
There are some seriously disturbed people into vehicle detailing. Have a look at their web sites and you'll see what I mean.

Yep there some serious detailers out there, but am just looking to protect with the hope of a shine
use the eriba as a conservatory, chill out area, so always in use (even in the depths of winter )
thought sharing my experience of polish over the years of ownership would perhaps help or perhaps not
Deeps the article was in a old ford mag, presume it was fully investigated and autoglym gave all product info at the time, but do check out their website for more upto date info as pete said..look at faq
they could of revised the ingredients since that article.
their rubber/plastic protection product is excellent on crocs and wellys for spucing up very worn looking ones to almost new.
the cover idea would work if it wasn't so windy here, having waved goodbye to the car cover am a bit reluctant to shell out (no pun intended) to a roof cap one.
cant keep applying protection every month so thought would ask here..

My neighbour snow foams, his car, his motorbike (a Harley) and his caravan,
three times each! then comes the detailing.
All three look as if they have just come from the showroom. and he does take
the lot to Switzerland and other such far flung places

Are we missing something here? We've not polished or waxed the roof of our Eriba in the four years we've had her.
Should we?
Unless you've got time (and money) to burn, I would give it a really good wash with some half-decent car shampoo followed by a going over with Autoglym Super Resin Polish. As Mr Cauldron points out - quite correctly of course - it is a polish, but it really isn't very abrasive at all.
Things like T-Cut are in a different league altogether, and best left for blending in partial DIY spray jobs or getting a bright red car which has faded to a tasteful matt pink back to bright red again.
Provided that the gel coat is in reasonably good nick and hasn't gone too chalky (or crazed), SRP will give a perfectly acceptable base for a coat or two of wax. Something with carnauba in it is probably best. Likely as not you won't get away with spending less than ten or fifteen notes on something worthwhile.
Much as it pains me to credit Mr Cauldron twice in the same post, he's spot on about Collinite 476S. It's good stuff and about fifteen quid a tin, but it'll last you quite a while.
It'd be dead easy to spend an absolute fortune, but it isn't a concours Ferrari; it's a caravan.
And one last thing. If you ever drop the polish or wax application cloth on the ground, chuck it away and get another one.

OK, really stupid question here..........polish first followed by wax or vicky vercky? If polish first - why bother if you're going to go over it with wax?
SRP will remove those marks and give a good shine (especially on car paintwork, where it will help to remove swirl marks, hazing and disguise fine scratches), and the rain will bead up on it, but a coat or two of decent carnauba-based wax every few months will leave it better protected against the elements and bird crap an' all.
