I retired (made redundant) at the age of 50 and said that's it no more work as we financially OK (wife still working) however moved to Cornwall to enjoy the county in 2004 and decided to volunteer to the National Trust a couple of days a week. Got offered a seasonal job by NT so thought why not bring in pocket money for holidays.
11 years on now working full time for NT and looking forward to September when I hit state pension age. Just got promoted to Manager status, think my career time clock has gone a bit wonky specially as most new "managers" for the trust are usually late twenties, female with a degree.
It does go to show us oldies can hang wid the young uns

Crickey Eribanut, if you stay there much longer the NT will have to put one of those thistle things on you to stop the public sitting on you!....

When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

When I think back to those times outside scraping the frost off the car in the dark with the temp still well below zero before even leaving to go to work its no contest.
Now I get up a couple of hours later and if its still frosty I wait till later to go out

I have a total of 27 days left to work until being made redundant I say redundant it is voluntary last working day 12 March 2015. At the ripe old age of 58 I will be hanging up my clogs having worked for my local Council for 38 years.

The good news I get my final salary pension straight away so no money worries. We still have the flower shop and the boss wants me to go and work there with her. There will be busy times mothers day valentines day Christmas but the rest of the time just a couple of hours a day.

We will be fitting in a lot more weekends in the puck away, I have plenty of hobbies so wont go stagnant. We will see!

Morphy.

4 days to go Steve ..............looking forward to it ?

I finished work due to a back problem, I had the operation but it took two years to recuperate
then , due to favouring my left side I had to have a total hip replacement another year to recuperate
I am now due a knee op. I wish I had stayed struggling at work!!

I had to retire due to muscular scelital problems too Rod at the age of 58
operations on my shoulders have improved things somewhat but not to the stage where I could have continued with my ex employment so early retirement was not an option .........more a way of life

Good luck with the knee

I remember my last day .............due to finish at 5 pm I was ordered to see my department head at 3 pm where there was a "thank you speech" and a cake and then ........................you can go now at about 3.30 pm where I sort of looked around and thought I was expecting another hour and a half of employment what now?

Stores did not want my overalls etc back and suggested I bin them or take them home and there I was unemployed and unemployable ................I had the social club booked for a farewell doo so sat in the car for an hour waiting for knocking off time for my workmates to join me

funny old world when it comes to retiring but I did need a lift home at the end

Got to retire first almost there sat here waiting to start the last four days now 07.00 been out with the dogs. Get up early every day wonder if that will continue with no where to go

Regarding the scrap on death don't think I will be worth much. Now that creates a thought how about a small business adventure in eriba puck shaped coffins. [

Well this is it sat here having a brew waiting to go to my very last day at work. Feels a bit sad really although also exciting to all of you who have been through this you know what I mean.

Its been a week of sorting stuff out at work making sure all is passed on. Then yesterday when I was emptying my office it was like moving house how much crap can you collect in 38 year.

Still upwards and onwards as one door shuts and all that, it has finally arrived!
