Another "Tyresome" Question...

A question mainly aimed at our friends who live on mainland Europe.
Where do you buy your caravan tyres from? Let me explain. Because of the age of our van we are running on tyres which are no longer a popular size. (185/70 R13 86T).
Although we haven't bought them yet, in the UK we can toddle down to our local friendly car tyre specialist and order them and they normally take 24 hours to be delivered and fitted.
However, last year when we experienced a tyre issue in Spain and France, the local camp site owners kept referring us to Caravan Dealers and the few car tyre specialists we visited (one was a big one, part of the local LeClerc superstore) politely told us that they couldn't do them, mainly because of the extra load rating.
Does this mean that if we did experience a problem that we couldn't resolve ourselves, it could take many days to fix and will normal car tyre dealers look after us?

Will the breakdown cover you have not cover locating/supplying a suitable tyre?
Do you carry a spare?

Er.....well in the true sense of the question, Roger, the answer is I don't. Well you could also say that I haven't because we've only owned the van a relatively short time.

However, as we shall be faced with this question at some point in the future I have already asked my local tyre fitter as well as my local Hymer dealer do they have in stock, or have easy access to, the size and make of tyres currently fitted to our van. In both cases the answer for yes. So as we have the van service annually in accordance with the guarantee, I shall have the tyres checked and changed at that time if necessary. Additionally, because vans over hear are subject to bi-annual testing (your MOT) I shall have the dealer replace the tyres prior to testing the van if that is deemed necessary.

As to when out and about - well we do carry a spare and one has to draw the line somewhere otherwise we'd be carrying nothing else but spare tyres lol.

On our first trip in the Eriba (2013) we drove down to the Loire Valley from our home in Brittany. On site, I realised that the tyres were not in quite as good condition as I had supposed, and one in particular was looking the worse for wear. I decided to replace both tyres and asked the camp-site owner where the best bargain was to be had. He gave me the details of a Tyre Centre just along the road and I had the 2 tyres replaced/balanced etc for 109 euros. I had to wait one day for the tyres to be delivered. I took the wheels off myself and took them along to the fitting centre. For France, this is not a bad price. You could easily pay a lot more here so shopping around is really the thing - this may be difficult when on holiday and you might not be au fait with the lingua franca sans compere ici en France. You might do worse than get a hold of the local phone book and look up 'Pneus' (tyres) and you will perhaps see the local tyre shop listed. PS/.... our tyres are 185/70 R13 86T. The first place I tried (a Renault dealer) told me that it was 'impossible' to obtain such tyres - but they were on my caravan 24 hours later. Also check allopneus for tyre delivery to a fitting centre.

On a previous caravan (Knaus) our local Renault garage had appropriate tyres in stock...again, about 54 euros each plus fitting.

Best advice has to be - make sure your tyres are fine before leaving the UK! Sorry I cannot be more precise!

Should also have said that allopneus works like Black Circles in UK, and I have a few friends etc here who use them to good advantage. Order on-line and allopneus will deliver to the local agent, and give you time and place for the fitting etc. Payment is to allopneus, which is good for the customer.

Thank you David. That's very helpful and thanks to the other contributors too.

The same size tyres as ours and roughly the same response.
We always check our tyres thoroughly before starting a big trip but due to something or other yet to be resolved, we found ourselves 1000 miles from home on our outward trip, having to use our new spare.
This left us with no alternative than to try and purchase a tyre to replace the defective one, with no success.

Have you investigated the possibility of using another size tyre,
perhaps more widely available even if it means an investment
in new rims?

Yes I had thought about that. I know that Pepe did a good piece about alloy wheels. Hmmm, wonder if those 14" Fox Alloys off our son's MK1 Punto that have been taking up space in our garage for 10 years, would fit? (or are caravan alloys special to accommodate for the extra load?)
The other option of course, much to the amusement of many, will be to carry an extra spare tyre only, in the spare wheel rack, as we always carry our spare wheel in the back of the car.

I'd be inclined to stick with the size you've got. If you change rims in order to change tyre size you'll have to change all three; you'll need to make sure that a different size (or section) will fit without fouling anything and as you know you can't just nick similar alloys off something else unless the offset and the PCD (bolt circle diameter) are correct.

Seems like M. Le Pneu sur la Manche just couldn't be arsed to find tyres in your size. I bet he didn't even try. If you look on any of the continental tyre websites like Oponeo, Tyreleader and PneusOnline there are zillions of tyres in the very size and load rating you need.

There are even a few with a higher load rating than the 86s you've got in case you felt you needed more of a margin.

The other thing is that you can't cover every eventuality by carrying a spare one of everything that might break, seize, fall off or go flat. At some point you have to throw a small caution to the wind

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la gare!

This company is common here in SW France

We use exactly this tyre but in 165/80 R13 83T, touché bois, no problems at 40psi.
