Don't take old 12v batteries to the council dump

I'm sure I'm telling everybody what they already know, but if you take old 12v batteries (car, caravan, motorbike, whatever) to the dump, all that'll happen is that the council geezers will take them to the scrappies and pocket the dosh.

Take them to the scrappy yourself.

I took four today; an 80ah Deta gel from the Troll which I'd ruined, one from the car which was old and tired, a Super Whizzo Leisure Special from the 230 which I'd also ruined and a 6v bike battery which I used to use to start the engine of a radio-controlled helicopter before I broke it.

In order to get my money I had to sign various bits of paper to prove that I wasn't a scally hell-bent on stealing lineside cable from Network Rail, and give them two thumbprints.

They needed one of each thumb, left and right, in a box, on the bottom of the form. A rectangular box plenty big enough for the thumbs of blokes with bigger thumbs than mine. I imagine most of the blokes who frequent scrapyards have big thumbs. I don't know this for a fact, but I bet if you measured the thumbs every bloke who went there regularly (and some of the ones who went less often too) and wrote the measurements down in a column, there would be a bias towards thumbs on the large side of average.

Once I'd done all that, a cheery bloke with a woolly hat and a dirty face pressed some keys on a computer keyboard so well-used that all of them except F12 were rubbed bare, and disappeared into the back leaving me to have an earnest conversation with the office whippet.

A few minutes later my patience was rewarded with a cheque for the handsome amount of £27.40. I walked out with a spring in my step and my hat at a very jaunty angle, as I'm sure you can imagine.

I intend to spend the money on a couple of sherbets and a number 46, a number 18, cashew nuts and a bag of prawn crackers for me and my lad since his mum is out on the toot tonight with her girly chums.

I can't wait.

.

When I worked at a Car Sales/ Workshop/ Garage ( one of my many and varied jobs ! ! ) we always kept our old batteries and sold them to 'traders' - though not for the very handsome price that P Le P got !!!!!

Don't buy a gas bottle! You can pick up a choice from our local tip, I just asked a guy I see often and he said "take what you want" I've seen others do it without asking but I prefer to be honest

Interesting, Hazardous Waste was my job before I retired.
Hopefully scrapyards are on the Hazardous Waste Register these days, very few were in days gone by, they used to smash them to get the lead out ...........god knows where the remains got dumped?

Still things like that have been tightened up in recent years so hopefully they get disposed of correctly these days.

My local tip is run by a contract company these days................. the days when you saw the guy running it heading out of the gate towing a big trailer of scrap metal behind him are long gone.

I think it is supposed to there but if you find or know a friendly tip operative it seems ok, I have total respect for these people without them we would be knee deep in debris, I've even taught my nearly 3 year old grandson about the "binners" they do a dirty, dusty and to some a disgusting job but again without them where would we be????

My local tip, all gas bottles logged in as they get a "recovery fee"
I paid £3 at a car boot sale for my bottle.

I met a bloke out walking with a dog like that.
I said 'Nice dog, Whippet?
He said 'No, bought it'.

Ha! If it's anything like ours it probably whipped itself — I've never known such a thief of a dog!
