The original post reminds me of the time we stopped at Dol and visited the small restaurant a short walk away through the woods, my son went last year and says it's not there anymore. anyway using my best franglais I proceeded to order the meals until finally ordering my own I wanted the Tournedos bien cuit. The waitress looked at me and shook her head, persevering I asked for it again. At this point I got the "un moment" and off she disappeared into the kitchen. From there we could hear raised voices mainly masculine. After a few minutes a rather portly chef stomped down to our table and threw the menu in my direction and told me to think again as he WOULD NOT cook Tourenedos bien cuit and stomped back to the kitchen. With all the restaurant now looking in my direction and the waitress back in attendance I meakly ordered poulet et frites
I have since learned as said above that French beef is very tasty even with a little blood

Last year in Deauville, Mrs R ordered Steak Tartare from a young waitress with no English. After about 5 minutes a polite young man came to the table and apologising profusely, explained that he had been sent over as he was the only person in the restaurant who could speak English.
He asked us if we knew what we had ordered. When we confirmed, he asked us did we know that it was not cooked. He apologised for the statement but said that they have had so many complaints from Brits about the fact the meat was raw

Now this is exactly why I so admire the French.
They do take pride in their cuisine. In what other country can you stop anyone on the street and ask where to find a good restaurant, and receive expert and carefully detailed guidance with recommendations on which dish to choose.
