Knock for Knock

There's a two page spread in the March edition of the CC magazine advertising Caravan Club insurance (page 86-87). In the ad. they publish a member's letter where he and his caravan came up against another caravan travelling in the opposite direction on a narrow road. With nowhere for either unit to reverse and traffic building up, the other driver attempted a pass and clipped the back of the letter writer's van.
The author was celebrating the fact that the CC had helped him win the claim against the other driver who was suggesting it was knock for knock.
How often have we come across drivers in narrow lanes (fortunately without the caravan on the back) who refuse to do anything except sit it out, inviting us to make the first move, content in the knowledge that if they are stationary then any scrapes would be down to us?

Last night, midnight we were just being relieved from baby sitting by our daughter and ptnr when the taxi driver they had used had this situation outside their house, but with no collision, just a blocked road, cars parked both sides, you know the case in suburbs.

The other car was woman driven with two inebriated men and one of them proceeded to give the taxi driver hell and made him reverse 2 3rds of the street, very unfairly. When my daughter went back out to remonstrate with him, he told her, just before me, to not get involved. Thankfully she did.

The woman driver made no attempt to back up and pull in which she could easily have done.

We waited although we going to opposite way and watched the procession at quite rightly and necessarily proceed at less than snails pace all the way back.

On a different but linked "insurance" way, Towergate emailed me yesterday to remind me of renewing the Eriba cover. As I am not with them anyway, I went to theire website as invited to get a quote. It wouldn't allow me as I wanted cover from mid Apri and they only cover up to end of March, then the next month by month!!!!!

There used to be an old public information film about single track roads and passing places, basically it was who's car is nearest to the passing point had to reverse. Or if you are in a narrow street with cars parked on each side, wherever the closest passing point is that car reverses......in theory.

We were touring in Germany and Austria some years ago with our old outfit, a Shogun 2.5 diesel SWB and a BIG Burstner caravan, we were using the Grossglockner alpine pass and it had / has? a tunnel with a bend, we entered only to be met at the far end (but he was already in) a large German tourist coach, he was'nt going to move! even when the Polizei attended he just refused, so when the Polizei had emptied the tunnel of traffic behind us, I had to reverse out! quite a distance and it has curvature, not easy, but the Polizei clapped and even treated me to a Brattie after, we shook hands and they led me through

I do feel movers have made people lazy with reversing, I fully understand if you have illness, feel your to old etc but no matter what you should still be able to reverse. There will come a time when you just might have to It's worth spending time next time you arrive on site, to at least reverse onto your pitch, then by all means use the mover to move it to your required position

I don't want to "wind anyone up" they are just my thoughts, only saying

Nah ! We should all have cars & caravans that park themselves - who possibly needs to know how to drive ? That's so 20th century !! Cars that put the brakes on if anything gets in the way ! Absolutely no need to be able to "drive", that's so out of date Agger :) Get up to date :)

PLEASE NOTE, AGGER, THIS IS ALL SAID 'TONGUE in CHEEK, NO OFFENCE INTENDED

I watched Top Gear last night and thought the comments about the driver less vehicles raised some concerns, anyone else see it????

First to admit I can't reverse my Eriba. I used to know how to reverse, learnt on a tractor and trailer in my teens but haven't done it since. Anyone coming to the Eribafolk meet prepared to teach me.
Julie.

Yup !! I'm another one who can't reverse the van.
Used to be fine back in 1970-1980, with 16 ft. van.............but now, with shorter Triton, I can't see which way its moving when I go backwards.
I sit and think about it.........front of car goes this way, back of car goes that way pushing the hitch, then front of van goes that way, making the rear of van go the other way........by this time, I've forgotten which way the front was supposed to be going. I need to write it all down, to remember it !! Ian.

Interseting I can reverse my Puck L at 90 degrees into a pitch., or to park in my drive between a couple of cars to line up and and push into the garage - BUT - try to do it with an 'audience ' or if I start to 'think 'about it then "NO CHANCE" Similarly I just CAN"T reverse in a straight line, keeping parallel to a curb for any distance ! Just "no hope'

I'm no expert but the best advice I have received to date (via a YouTube clip) was to look in the door mirrors and as the view of the van becomes larger in one, steer gently towards it straightening up as it comes back into line.

Another tip I received from an experienced caravanner was to take everything slowly and to make the steering movements small.

My first attempts at reversing my camping trailer were a disaster and really put me off. It wasn't until much later that I learned that the smaller the trailer the harder it is to reverse.

My worst experience with the Triton to date was uphill on a slightly sloping, damp site when the smell of burning clutch was both nauseating and scary.

I'm still not very good at reversing but while I continue to practice, thank goodness for motor movers!

Too true squire. I used to tow a large twin axle trailer on occasions as part of my work and I found it quite easy ( once having to negotiate partially built show stands on the 1st floor of Earl's Court). However, we also had a small trailer for camping gear which, when on the back of the Land Rover County, we needed an aerial on the trailer to remember it was there, and that trailer was impossible to reverse
