Our Troll only has spot reading lamps and we sometimes find them a bit intense so I thought I would investigate fitting some ambient lighting.
I thought that hidden lighting from behind the curtain pelmets would be ideal. I purchased a 5m strip of SMD lighting through eBay complete with remote control and colour changing. This cost all of about £13 !
Plus the cost of a switch, a couple of bullet connectors and some terminal blocks it came to less than £20.
The LED strip can be cut to any length and can be linked to another by soldering wires between the terminals.
I cut 3 lengths of LED strip, to fit behind the 3 pelmets round the rear dinette in our 550 Troll, soldering a link wire to each one for connecting them together.
The strip comes with a sticky back already but this did not seem sufficient so I stuck some heavy duty double sided behind the pelmets first which seems to hold better. The link wires I fed up into the voids in the rear corners where all the van lighting wires are situated. They are then connected together with white terminal blocks.
The main controller I connected up to a spare 12v connection I found in the R/H void with 2 small bullet connectors and the I/R sensor shows through a small gap in the corner. I have fitted a on/off switch in the top corner pocket to isolate the 12v feed when required.
The end result is really good although only a couple of colour settings are really any good. Red looks good in daylight but terrible at night. Pale orange or white are probably the best for at night.
The brightness is fully adjustable too.
