I'm interested in discovering what percentage of forum members tow their vans with either Petrol or Diesel driven cars.

Yes gents - I'm not too concerned about the absolute nitty gritty so if your car is let's say marked as a Corsa 2.0 then mark it down as above 2 litre. I'm just after discovering what percentage of users are managing to tow their units with what one would generally consider to be a car with not enough grunt. For example - there might be someone whose towing their Triton 430 quite happily with a 1100cc Mini although it would never personally cross my mind that such a car was up to the job. OK, maybe the 1100cc Mini is bad example but you'll get my drift.

The real point in this exercise is that I'm trying personally to decide as to whether my next car actually needs to be a diesel. I quite like the Mazda CX-5 150PS (110kW) Diesel but am a bit concerned about negative reports/trouble with the DPF. On the other hand, they also do a 165PS (121kW) Petrol version.

Torque figures for the Diesel are 380Nm at between 1800-2600 RPM whereas with the Petrol the figures are 210Nm at 4000 RPM. I'm guessing that either really would pull a Triton 430 quite happily but also feel sure that the Diesel would hold it's resale value better.

You might find that's the case on the continent (France especially seems reluctant to break off its affair with diesel), but in the UK it looks as if the tide of opinion is turning back to petrol.

For what it's worth, I pull my 430 with a 2.0l petrol swb RAV4, rated at around 140hp, and I really don't notice the van being there.

Well this quick survey has thrown up some interesting and surprising figures - at least in my view that is.

I had anticipated that most members towing a caravan would do so with a Diesel driven car but hadn't expected the figure to be quite so high at 97% with only 1 (3% of Poll) using a Petrol driven car.

Another surprising figure is the high percentage - 60.6% - driving Diesels with less than 2L in capacity and obviously happy to do so and problem free.

From the numbers polled, 12 (36.4%) were towing with Diesel driven cars above 2L and I wonder is this out of necessity because they are pulling heavier vans or is it simply just a question of personal preference in owning a more powerful vehicle.
