just taken my wheels off to give the wheels a clean and paint them white. Checked the date codes and the two on are 1997 vintage!! the spare is a 96 vintage!!
So although they dont look to be bad i think i should replace them.
they are Michen XZX 4.5R10 which i cant find anywhere.
So what is available. as i cant seem to find 4.5 width easily

I notice that you've found the thread regarding 10" wheels inner tubes on 10 inch wheels yes or no ? and there's a lot of discussion about tyre sizes on there, particularly regarding load rating codes.
Your existing Michelins, which were probably new with the van, will have a load and speed rating code on them. That code is as important as the tyre sizes.
This Caravan Club Technical Information Sheet makes interesting reading.

96\97 vintage means due to rubber degradation they need replacing best advice I can offer is be sure that the weight distribution of new ones is within the weight distribution of your axle limits IE a puck that age has a weight limit of 500 kg so the tyres need to be rated to at least 250 kg each ........ more for safety limits

oh i know they are past it by a long way. just want to find some the same width which seems to be fairly difficult. i would go with 500kg per tyre to be safer.
Having a VW camper van i know all about the importance of correct load rated tyres.

Looking at the various comments on the other thread and its links, others are fitting 145/80 R10's which it would appear, are Mini tyres. This is a thread off the French Forum.
You say yours are Michelin XZX 4.5R10 ?
The argument about using mini tyres is the load rating.(69 = 325kg). If you go for a 500kg per tyre load rating, are you worried about putting additional strain on the Puck's suspension? (see the Caravan Club link above)
Trailer Tek appear to offer a range of 10" tyres.
I'm not qualified to advise you one way or the other but as it's now the time to replace the tyres on my Troll, I'm going for the same size tyre and rating as was fitted to the van when new.
Not much help, I'm afraid. I've spent a lot of time recently discussing things with our local tyre specialists who I found to be quite helpful.

Look at this thread pkrboo Michelin XZX 145 SR 10
Could you have missed a 1 off the front of your tyre sizes when you looked at them?
Just a thought. (note ! the poster has a 1971 Puck)

4.5Jx10 isn't that uncommon a wheel size. The 4.5 is the rim width in inches between the inner sides of the flanges, not the overall width, so a 4.5J rim isn't quite as skinny as it implies. The J bit denotes the rim flange profile where the tyre bead sits. 4.5J rims were used a lot on Minis - proper Minis that is, not pretend BMWs.
There is a reasonable choice of tyres which will fit those rims, several of which are on the site Roger linked to in post number 5.

i have had a couple of proper minis as well!!
Anyway more updates: I have found under the many layers of paint that the wheels are Mefro 3 x 10 and as they have hubcap lugs and hubcaps on them i assume they are original?

so after what seems like an age i took the plunge and bought a set of wheels and tyres as it worked out cheaper. i bought 145R10 tyres on Mefro wheels 100mm PCD.
when i received them i put them on and found them to be WAY to wide. gad a look and the wheels are 3.5x10 , originals are 3x10.
Plus the tyres are much wider overall. what i have done in the mean time is fit the new tyres to the old rims. with no inner tubes this gives me just about 5mm clearance to the edge of the outer arch. loads of room inside though. anyone else have this problem when they got new tyres or wheels?
