House insurance

Hi Guys,

we have previously had long stints away in Europe but our current insurance company now has a max of 90 days, with most others having a max 60 days - insufficient for our 4 months away this summer. Some will insure for longer for hefty additional monthly payments and others will give you 'unoccupied' cover whilst you are away in excess of the 60 days, which excludes some fairly important cover. The only suitable cover I can find is with the C&CC, which gives 180 days for members with a home insurance policy. Their quote is quite reasonable at £340 p.a. plus the £37 membership fee.

Anyone have any useful info re this problem or have insurance with C&CC?

Thanks :)

We are with Home protect, they gave us an extension from 30 up to 180 consecutive days per trip for £410. when we had a claim with them it was handled quickly and fairly.

Have you thought of other options such as renting out your house via AirBNB or using a housesitter?

We have usually asked one of our children to move in for a few days so that the unoccupied times are broken up.

At the prices quoted above it would be cheaper to fly back for a day or 2?

Same here although if anyone broke into our house they would quickly realize two things:-
1) As soon as they entered they would think somebody had beaten them to it.
2) They wouldn't be able to find anything useful or if they did, they are better that we two for we can never find anything.

Sorry I am late here....
Thanks for your ideas etc. We used to be okay until the children all left. Until last month, one of them still lived locally, so he could 'weekend' here whilst we were away, but he's now moved much further away. We went with the CCC insurance. There should be no problems, as the house is checked daily by my neighbour but I value peace of mind when we are away. Be interesting to find out the benefits of CCC membership too.

Agger - I didn't think the price was too bad, our current insurance is only 40 less and the CCC one has some additional benefits as well as the 180 days. What do other people pay? Mind you, that's buildings and contents, so maybe you were thinking it was just contents.

One of the best benefits of C & CC membership is the RAC Arrival scheme. It is only available to members and covers car AND caravan in the UK and Europe. Well worth the membership.

One of the benefits of buying the Skoda Octavia was the RAC recovery. Covers Car & Caravan in the UK. When the warranty expired Skoda/RAC offered extended membership for £135 for 2 years. £65 extra for continental cover, but I won't be needing that for the forseeable future.
