I have just checked our 600g dry powder Fire extinguisher in the Eriba and find it is years out of date. Upon checking the one in the car and also the one in our kitchen, they too are out of date.
However, I can't find a replacement anywhere for less than a tenner ( that's a total of £30 ). Has anyone found them at a better price?
I notice that Lidl often sell the 1kg one for about £8. Do others carry a bigger extinguisher and if so, where is it mounted? Our small one is mounted on the side of the high level cupboard immediately to the side of the entrance door.
Presumably, there's a safe and correct way of disposing of them too?

It looks like £8 online is the cheapest but then you get hit with p&p which is about £4,
Wilko sells them for £9.99

Powder extinguishers settle and pack down tight.
On a fire fighting course we were given an out of
date powder and were told to trigger them, pretty
well all that came out was the propellant.
It should give disposal instructions on the extinguisher

What's interesting is the warning on the Wilco page that John has linked to:-
"Ideal to keep in the boot, this small fires extinguisher is for liquid and electrical equipment fires. Small fires extinguisher, for liquid and electrical equipment fires. WARNINGS Not suitable for use on deep fat fires. Keep out of reach of children. Not to be refilled. Always read label."
So is there a better product for caravans?

A fire blanket?
I would rather not use an extinguisher if possible because of the ensuing mess.
We do have one but I would be very tempted to let the van burn as long as it wasn't a danger to others.

We were told, just a fire blanket;
Everyone out, First, then use the
blanket. If it is too big for a blanket
just get out.

I'm absolutely amazed at the difference in prices of fire blankets. There's even one seller on Amazon offering 1qty for £3.96 plus free delivery or 2qty for £12.02 plus £3.98 delivery. How does that work ?
We finally ordered one, 1 metre square and when it arrived it was 1.2 metres square. When we compared the quality to a quite expensive one we've had in the kitchen for several years, the only obvious difference is that the kitchen one comes in a fancy hard plastic box.
Upon researching replacements for our 600g dry powder fire extinguishers, the cheapest we could find were in Wilkinsons £9.99.

Be careful with the use of dry powder in confined spaces particularly if you suffer from asthma. The discharge of a dry powder extinguisher can also impair vision.
British standards for dry powder extinguishers changed a while ago and avoiding their use in confined spaces without a full risk assessment of the health of the user is to be avoided..supported by the Institute of Fre Engineers.

Phil is a motor race Post Chief/observer and has to undertake fire training at least bi-annually in order to keep up his registration. If by any mischance you have to use a dry powder extinguisher and have the misfortune to inhale any of the powder be aware that for the next 24 hrs you should be in easy reach of a loo - apart from any other side effects they can have quite a remarkable effect on this bodily function
