Smoke alarms, domestic

When we altered the cottage 15 yrs ago we had to have to smoke alamrs fitted as part of the Bldg Regs. They are mains powered.
Over the years I have happily changed the batteries.
One of them was beeping last evening, but the new battery didn't stop it.
It wasn't easy for me up a step ladder, working overhead with reduced power and feeling in hands and fingers and poor balance on a small step.
I googled it - they should be changed max 10yrs.
Just contacted a leccy on Checkatrade who was amazed we had square ones and he is quoting me to replace bothof them.

Thanks, Graham. It took Agger to say that, I couldn't find the right words.

If you contact your local fire station* they may supply and fit a couple of alarms FOC.
*Probably not a good idea to ring them on 999 though

Mains powered detectors usually have a battery for back up in case of power failure.
Can I please take this opportunity to ask you all to check your alarms...? I cannot stress enough, they do save lives.
And on the subject of your local Fire Service fitting free of charge, good luck on that one......! Different brigades still do fit them FOC, but not many, due to government cutbacks. We are only allowed to fit them FOC to the elderly and vulnerable .

Yep we had two fitted by the fire brigade. They got a call out half way though and ran off leaving tools. My mum who got them fitted was in her element. And yes she is disabled. Made her day they did. Esp as they had to come back for there tools too.
But yes do check regularly
