Rain getting in to my Puck !
Rain getting in to my Puck !

Yes, i'm sad to report my Puck is leaking with heavy rain... I have discovered on two occasions when the wind is driving the rain towards the wardrobe side, the back of the seat cushion is damp under the window. I have checked the window seals and they do seem to be ok as far as i can see, but then i noticed the long silver trim with black insert (no idea what its for) is coming unstuck from the side of the van in the middle of it, looks like glue or something has deteriorated......it is exactly adjacent to the part in the van where the seat cushion is damp.....could this be the culprit and can water get in behind this trim? Looking forward to hearing your words of wisdom as always!!

Without a picture it's hard to say, it could be the window seal especially if it is the old grey type, by now they will have lost all their properties and they will be cracking. They will no longer provide a proper seal to the window and water could be tracking down into the van. If the water is below the waistline it could be the mastic on the external belly band that has gone hard/ shrunk over the years and may need replacing. The grab handles can become lose and water track down the screws, however as yours is on the side it won't be a issue for your predicament.

I got the feeling you were talking about the waste trim (red arrow)
maybe you mean the yellow arrowed one? which I was led to believe was just a bump strip?

The waste strip has a join behind it..........the bump strip? .........no idea

I was about to reply and got sidetracked. Thanks, Nev.
I think what you are looking at is the waist Herzim strip that covers the joint between the upper and lower side skins of the caravan. There is a non-setting mastic behind it and if this has been compromised in any way then water could seep through into the interior.
To do a good job, you would have to do the same as Pop540, i.e. remove the old strip reseal the joint with new mastic and reseal or renew it. If your strip is fixed with steel screws, it would be a good idea to replace them with stainless steel.

Thanks again.....the strip i am talking about does not go all the way round the waist of the caravan, tho of course that could be where the problem lies......the strip i mean is about 3 ft long and doesnt appear to be of any use, however it is coming away in the middle of it from the side of the van, there is like a sticky stuff showing (not the usual black sealant), where it is coming away is exactly the same point where the damp is showing in the van, tho this could be coincidental! If its not this, it must be the waist strip or the window seals! Oh buggar!!!

There is another possibility worth checking at least that way you will have covered all bases. The pop top canvas sits in a groove with a rubber insert which forms part of the seal I helped a guy re-do his on site. On his van it was as you suggest in driving rain otherwise he said it seemed ok, we took out the whole bottom of the pop top and just re-inserted it, does'nt take long and you will have excluded that as a potential problem

I had the same thing on my Troll just after I bought it,
the water was getting in via the window seal and then
building up on the internal framework until it came through
the wallboard just above the backrest cushion.
AL replaced the window seal under warranty
It only showed up under very heavy driving rain

Thanks Crow.....thats interesting, sounds the same......have just sent an enquiry to Jandi for the cost of replacement window seals. Out of interest, was there any sign on the exterior of the window seal that it could be letting rain in?

No I resealed the top brake light which was considered the most likely,
I applied the hosepipe to the waist trim in the suspected area with no
water ingress so called AL who said they would deal with it.
I think they said it was the rubber underneath the window frame cracked
and crazed.

The high-level brake light is a common source of water ingress but not all vans have these and the water appears on the rear wall surface. I first noticed wet patches on the narrow cushion across the back of the van. The solution was a new light unit and liberal application of the correct sealant.
