Fuel Prices? What's going on?

We had cause to fill the car with diesel the other day for the first time since we've been back in the UK.

Diesel is cheaper than petrol? What's that all about? I'm worried that they are up to something!

For years, I've moaned about the fact that, irrespective of the base price, everywhere else in the EU the price of diesel has always been lower than petrol (except, of course in the UK). On more than one occasion I even took pen to paper (that shows how long ago it was) and sent a letter to the Government questioning the fact. Of course I got the usual drivel, very wide of the mark and not answering the question directly, in response.

Diesel here 112.9 pl I get 750 miles plus from a 70 ltr tank so really pleased but like you wonder whats going on. Also noticed the new Audi diesels (not all of them) need another addidtive added every so often it has a seperate tank for this, if it runs out your stranded as the car won't start!!

I think this 'additive' is injected, by the engines ECU when required to burn off the particulates in the DPF filter.

This is true, but there is a dash warning if the Adblue (the stuff in question) is running low just as there is if the diesel is running low.

And if the diesel runs out the car won't start either.

For what it's worth, Adblue is nothing but urea and de-ionised water, so if the worst comes to the worst you could always decant the contents of your steam iron into the additive tank and top it up with piddle.

I agree totally, but as most people forget to signal my guess would be they'd forget the adblue just as some forget diesel or petrol, it's just something else they'd have to remember, as for a steam iron, whats one of those?

What is interesting and often very confusing is that mainland Europe offers Premium diesel as well as "normal" (that's how they refer to it in Spain). This year we noticed that every garage we used in Spain and Portugal was selling both. What was a nice touch was that most garages employ a forecourt attendant who fills the car up for you.
In the case of the Touran there is a boldly displayed warning inside the fuel cap to only use normal diesel so we needed to be certain what we were purchasing.

Does it actually warn you against using premium diesel?

Just had a look. No, it suggests using normal diesel but doesn't mention premium diesel, only warning against bio-diesel.
Haven't read the handbook though.

Peugeot/Citroen has used the injected additive system for some time and the forums are full of queries about low-level fluid messages and horror stories about the cost of refilling the tank and resetting the ECU. £400 is not unusual. As the contents of the tank are supposed to last for 50,000 miles or so, this is not really so unreasonable.

There are kits for DIY owners to do the job themselves but a lot of people seem to have experienced problems getting the system to reset after refilling. Some systems also appear to have sensors in the fuel cap which can fail and the level sensors in the tanks seem prone to failure if the fluid level falls to the extent that they are exposed to the air.

Some forum comments also suggest that the dashboard low-level indicator is based on 'guesswork' based on driving style rather than measurement and are prone to error.

With our Citroen C4 you refill at 90,000 miles, a warning comes on, a Citroen garage charged £120 for the job.

apparently both petrol and diesel are sold by the ton weight by manufacturer but retailed at pump by litre
there is more diesel 0.83kg/l to a ton than petrol 0.75 kg/l
petrol is approx. 10 %less heavy than diesel
there are 10% fewer litres in ton of diesel so diesel costs 10% more per litre
then the tax added on for both fuel this rate changes by country
confused yet, the article is on page 16, august 2015, Landrover Monthly
does this help answer ??
