Scheiber BIP 30.65100.84 - Bipped. Is there a replacement model ?

Hello folks, I have a faulty BIP which produces no 12V output. The circuit board is scorched and I would like to replace the unit.

It appears this model is not current. I have found a 30.65100.00 for €222 which seems to have the same spec. Does anyone know how the 30.65100.84 differs ? Was it a Hymer special ?

You are spot-on there!

If I can help at all, just ask but - the expert on this and all things electronic is forum member JohnE. I'm delighted with John's modifications to my BIP unit (as detailed in the link to my article that hob posted) and can thoroughly recommend his solution to my problems.

Update - Bip replacement

Update to my original post.

Thanks for the suggestions. As the circuit board was obviously scorched I felt the chance of a repair was unlikely, even to reuse the 12v side distribution with an external charger/supply. Also, my Bip worked for 10 years without issue, my problem stemmed from water ingress in the 7S plug. I don't think they are inherently unreliable, maybe a tad old-fashioned and probably designed for motor caravan rather than trailer caravan use.

So here is my solution.

I tried to price a replacement from Hymer -£380 plus Vat. There are only about 4 left on the shelf. I think that is too expensive.

I then obtained the generic version of the BIP from a dealer in the Netherlands which was £270 delivered. Some other European sites have it cheaper but I couldn't get responses to my initial enquiries.

Now to the differences that Hymer obviously specified

1. The metal chassis that the PCB is mounted to has an additional cut out to enable all the 12v wiring to enter the rear of the unit. The right most cable entry in the generic model is obscured.

2. There is an additional 12v N spade terminal on the distribution block on the plastic rear backplane

3. There is an additional wire tail soldered on to the PCB fuseholder for the battery. This is the connection to the 12v single pole switch to connect the towing vehicle 12v supply.

To address these:

I decided to retain the installed rear plastic backplane with the extra terminal. This also meant that I didn't have to reroute or remake cable ends. You don't even have to disconnect the N connections.

I unscrewed the PCB complete with metal chassis and recreated the cut out in the new chassis with a hacksaw, and swapped the PCB complete with transformer. Note that you can't easily swap the chassis on the PCB as it is riveted.

I used a piggy back blade fuse holder to connect to the 12V single pole switch from the bottom 15A fuse position. I had to file away a little of the BIP plastic front cover to allow the new fuse holder to project out.

And that's it. The PCB is exactly the same and all functions are working.

I'm suggesting this as another route for folks with a failed BIP unit, especially as the Hymer spares run out. Please use a competent installer if you don't have the necessary skills as you have to disconnect the 240v circuit breaker to remove the transformer.

I know this thread is old but I have similar problems although not quite the same with my 2008 Eriba Triton 430GT.

The problem I have is that the fridge, charging and everything works fine will mains hook up but, when connected to the car the relay on the BIP constantly switches and the battery is not charged and neither is the fridge operated. The light on the fridge switched on and off constantly. The relay can be heard to switch on and off whether or not the fridge is switched on.

The power relay in the car has been replaced and the cable from the plug to the rear of the caravan has been replaced when we recently had the van serviced as the sheath had a cut in it.

No doubt a problem with the dreaded Scheiber BIP 30.65100.84 but could it simply be a faulty relay which is easy to replace?

Is JohnE still around or can anybody give me details on how to contact him?
