When I was a kid we used to put halfpennies on the railway lines to convert them into pennies to use in the Beech Nut chewing gum machines.
Vending machines were much less sophisticated (and kids more stupid) back in the 1950s.
Happy days.

Quote: Aaron Calder wrote in post #16Indeed. And speaking of happy days, I vividly remember the one when my mate Tim Emery and I were rummaging about in our sideboard and found half a crown in a jamjar full of foreign coins.
Happy days.
Needless to say I didn't tell Mater, opting instead to pocket it and sprint for the sweetie shop on the corner.
Half a crown bought a hell of a lot of four-a-penny blackjacks and fruit salads back then...

Quote: Frantone wrote in post #14Yes, you're right, it did. Ha! I'm such a cheapskate, I used to go around pressing Button B in all the phone boxes. Soon got enough for a frozen jubbly! I still do the same now, with carpark ticket machines. But I've gone past the jubbly stage I'm afraid.
But didn't button B randomly dispense old penny coins?

Don't remember kali and Spanish.
Method: suck Spanish, dip in kali, suck, repeat until sick.

Quote: jasond4289 wrote in post #6I'm using Firefox and have only just discovered 'request desktop site' command. When checked it goes back to normal.
I use Chrome on my Android device and the tools button (three dots, top right) and "request desktop site" does the same thing if you forget your German!
Many thanks.

And it was Poppets that made a shilling go a long long way, not a Topic. A Topic had a hazelnut in every bite, leading to the joke "Q: What has a hazelnut in every bite? A: Squirrel shit."
