Service - What to expect

Hello,

My first service is due (along with a damp check). What kind of things will they do on the service apart from the checking of brakes etc. Will they do day to day things such as grease the steadies, oil a squeaky jockey wheel etc?

Thanks.

There's a service check list in Roger's post here.

My guess is bearing in mind how much a main dealer service is going to cost if you drop the van off and say 'Service that, please', that's what you'd expect them to do. If you have the service done by an independent engineer, mobile or otherwise, they will do as much or as little as you ask them to do and charge a commensurate amount.

How much you ask them to do depends on how much you feel you can do - or want to do - yourself. An awful lot of what's on that list is dead easy and requires no particular skills at all.

These vans aren't complicated. It's like keeping a bread bin running properly in comparison to servicing and maintaining a car.

Out of curiosity, is this the first service from new or the first service in your ownership?

This is the first service from new. Done by the main dealer who sold us the Eriba (Airstream).

I've heard good reports from people who have had vans (all makes) serviced in Andoversford

Thanks Philip.

I apologise for all the nosy questions.

But here's another one...

How many miles do you reckon you've done since buying it? The reason I ask - and I'm not trying to sow discord or undermine anybody or anything - is if you haven't actually been all that far or used it that much, might it be worthwhile just getting the water ingress test done to maintain the warranty and get a service done (by someone like JohnE of this parish) when it needs it rather than getting it done annually as a matter of course?

Please feel free to tell me to bugger off if it's none of my business

Good point. I've done about 1000 miles which is not that much in car terms. It's already booked, but I will definitely take that on board for next year. I'll see what gets done and produce a list of minor niggles I could probably tackle to try and add some value.
