Miltons solution
For those of you who are using Miltons sterilising solution in the cold water tank how are you going about it and what percentage of solution are you using? I realise of course that you're going to flush the system through with it but the question is more; what percentage of solution to water is being used and how long to leave it in the system for. Additionally, is Miltons sufficient for everything as regards ensuring water system sterilisation?

I'm sure I remember the late Rob Jackson explaining that Milton could cause the release of the plastiser compounds in pipe work thus causing an unpleasant taste which was very hard to shift.

Not sure about Milton, but when I bought my caravan several months ago I went to my local caravan dealership who sell a plethora of water system sterilisers! Varying prices but mostly the same ingredient. In the end I went for Puriclean as it did the whole system including boilers and it was economical. No discernible taste so I'm happy and will use it again.
I can't see how Milton could be that bad if it's safe for babies teats.

I bought a small tub of Puriclean powder from our local caravan spares shop and it certainly did the trick.
Dosage is 1 teaspoon per gallon, leave to soak for 1-12 hours then pump out then rinse with fresh water.
The smallest 100g tub should last for ages as it will treat 20 gallons.

I use Milton, but only because I've got a bottle of the stuff lying around. I use the dilution it says on the label, filling both containers the night before we go aaway nd then pumping them out to clean the pipes just before we leave. We don't use that water to make tea with or to drink. The nearest it gets to our mouths is for rinsing the toothbrushes. The rest is for washing up and stuff.

We have used milton solution to steralise the water system and we also drink from the containers, we have never noticed any taste issues. However as the puriclean is as cheap as Milton it's worth using the correct stuff for the job, I will get a tub from my local caravan shop....
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
Just to add a note puriclean is a sterilizer instructions are on the tub showing how to use it, it should be flushed out and rinsed before filling with drinking water.
Do not add it to drinking water.

Our drinking water is very good in this country, apart from some odd tastes in
different parts of the country. we use a couple Tesco or Milton tablets to flush through
every once in a while, with bi-carbonate to freshen up the water containers and pipes
at the start of the season.

Quote: crow wrote in post #10I agree, unless you live in Blackpool and the Morecambe Bay area, where I understand they still have to boil all their tapwater. Though I'm never that sure about the water taps on site, which quite often are just standpipes in the open air. But, like crow, we use Milton just to counteract whatever fungus or crud might have built up in the pumps or pipes in between trips.
