Hello Eribafolk. Can you please give me your expert opinion? I've been quoted for a Towtrust tow bar or a Witter tow bar for £35.00 more?

I'm no expert, FPF, but I fitted a Witter with detachable tow ball some years ago, and so far it's done an admirable job of keeping the caravan stuck to the back of the car when required..

Tow-Trust, based near Coventry, are relatively new on the scene and are gaining a good reputation as tow equipment manufacturers; Witter are a long-established company and nearly all suppliers and fitters seem to offer them as a first choice.

Both are members of the NTTA and their products are Type Approved.

I have read somewhere that Tow-Trust's towbars must be serviced every 1000 miles by an approved outfit, to comply with their warranty conditions. That seems quite unusual and it may be worth verifying with your supplier.

Having said that, it's not a bad idea to check the towbar fixings after the first few hundred miles and once in a while after that - although MoT inspections now include towbar checks.

When I refitted our towbar on the Shogun, I wrapped the towbar in 2 inch electrical tape, the tape was removed regularly and replaced after visual inspection of the towbar, never needed to re paint that towbar, the tape did it's job in protecting it, well worth thinking about, they rust very easily even with Hamerite, they hang down and get wet and dirty so it was worth it for us

Should have done that to your caravan as well, Agger.

Would have saved you a fortune on wax, polishes and those microfibre kittens

Bloody hell! Are they serious?

At that rate I'd have to have them come out to France four or five times a year and as for the Randas, they'd have to make up an extra bunk for the mechanic and take him with them with the distances they cover.

It can't be right. No one should have to suffer like that.

I found the section below buried in a download on Tow-Trust's website. It's the only reference to warranty and warranty requirements I could find.

It confirms your once in a while bit but doesn't elucidate.

Whether there's more to it than this I dunno...

"MAINTENANCE

Periodic maintenance must be carried out and should include checking:-
All fixing points and torque settings.
All towbar components for any movement from original position and ensure it is rigid, square and secure.
Chassis for corrosion around towbar mounting points.
Possible wear on towball.
Towbar paintwork for chips, scratches etc.
Any use outside of the recommended towing limits for the vehicle or failure to carry out maintenance checks will invalidate warranty."

Thanks for ferreting that out, Pete

I would imagine similar warranty conditions are imposed by most, if not all, towbar manufacturers anyway.
