It all happens at once.

We developed serious brake noise over the last week and the first I could the car into garage was today.
I could tell with my untrained ear and eye it was a metal on metal graunch so we haven't used the car since last Friday. Managed with lifts from friends - yes we have one or two.
New pads and discs front near side and two new front tyres while you're at it.
Probably won't go out tonight.

Derek, have I misunderstood your post? You said discs and pads nearside front, it's normal practice to replace discs and pads in pairs ie both sides. Hopefully this is the case.

I have to agree with that replacing only one side is considered bad practice as replacing one side will result in better braking on one side meaning that the car will pull to one side instead of breaking in a straight line.
Does the car not have a brake pad wear warning light? most modern cars do........ as the pads wear a wire in them sets off a warning light when they wear too much.

We have front wheel dricve and no warning lights thanks.
The reason we're all going on about it is that they really shouldn't be doing that.
