SUPERKETTLE SAFETY ALERT
Risk of Scalding
Dear Customer,
You are receiving this e-mail because you have in the past bought a stainless steel SuperKettle AX300D from us. If you no longer have the kettle, you can ignore this message, unless you have passed the kettle to someone else, in which case we would be grateful if you would forward the information.
We have become aware that as the kettles age, the black plastic can gradually become brittle or cracked from the constant exposure to heat. The risk is that if the kettle is lifted by the handle, the top part can separate from the water chamber, allowing it to become unstable and possibly spill out hot water. This is especially the case if it is lifted with the full weight of water inside, or if it gets bumped during movement.
We are asking you to do two things: inspect your kettle for signs of aging, and also NEVER to lift the kettle by the handle when it contains hot water.
INSPECTION. To inspect the kettle, do it with the kettle empty and the lid open. Look all round at the black vertical wall in the area that is normally filled by the lid. The first area to show signs of aging is usually near the front left corner near the small alloy button which is the reboil sensor, and where the plastic is thinnest. You are looking for greyness, crazing or cracks, or small fragments of black plastic around the seal or in the water chamber. Other signs of aging are ‘leaking’ of water from the bottom (from condensation through the plastic) or tripping of the power supply. If you see any of these features, the kettle is becoming unsafe and is at the end of its useful life.
HANDLING. We advise that the kettle should NEVER be lifted or carried when it contains boiling water. Even if you think it is in good condition, the full kettle weighs over 3kg, and it is not safe to lift it by the handle. If you need to move your hot kettle, use the pump to empty out the hot water first and then unplug it.
Ø Check your kettle for deterioration.
Ø Never lift or carry the kettle containing hot water.
Ø Make anyone else who uses it aware of this information.
