How much do you pay for a damp test on your caravan and is it worth having it done, do any of you service your own van or pay to have it done.
The price some of the dealers want is way out of order when you consider there is just the brakes, wheel bearings and hitch to check and then a check over the condition of the chassis. Plus the gas and electric. The gas is just a quick pressure check plus a visual of the pipes etc., and the same with the electrics

You don't have to use a Hymer dealer if your van is out of warranty, you could use a mobile engineer which tend to be a lot cheaper.
It's useful to have done if your thinking of selling your van to give the buyer confidence if you have the test sheet.
However there are damp testers on the market that you can buy and test for damp yourself.

Caravan servicing and repairs, including mobile technicians.

The cheap (£5-£15) damp meters have sharp pins that you poke into the wood, making holes/scratches, otherwise they measure damp on the surface, that either you can see and feel, or got there because of simple condensation. (resistance measurement)

tbh, I wouldn't waste money buying one.

To do a reliable non-damaging test you need the contact less type, that cost North of £200, these measure moisture within the bulk of the material, and can ignore surface moisture. They should find where damp is getting into the insulation as the inner panels are quite thin.

No you don't I agree, and if you can find a GOOD mobile engineer you could possibly make some savings. However, that said, don't totally disregard the option of using a GOOD dealer because they may also check things that don't immediately spring to mind or are not easily done on your front drive. As an example - upon picking up our van from it's annual dealer service, I discovered a can of black undercoating spray tucked away in a corner under the table which the technician had obviously overlooked. This prompted me to crawl on the floor and have a look under the van at which point I discovered that the entire underneath of the van had been resprayed with this undercoating protection. The van is only 2 years old and I can't imagine for one moment that the bottom was in absolute need of re-undercoating so if this exercise is standard practise then I'm well pleased.

The main Hymer dealer in Sindelfingen (Nr Stuttgart) Germany. Shall I tell them that you're on the way?
