Lights on?

Both of us light up when it's poor visibility

I posted the original post earlier after as I said coming back from Bristol, however I was first made aware of it when I spotted vehicles displaying front lights only, then recently our local Plod have been running a Twitter campaign which has mentioned it several times. I guessed people, myself included did not know if the Eriba lights came on? I'm not passing judgement on anyone on here, just highlighting ( no pun intended) the problem. I just know when your out and about you'll notice them like myself

Arggg..........................................
That third picture ( no lights) is very familiar indeed. I've just spent an hour following one of those at about 4 foot distance on a fixed bar.
50mph down a rainy M4 with no forward view and no power steering, recovering a car belonging to one of the kids.

It is frustrating and is just going to cause problems, the only lights I use are headlights on either dip or main (if appropriate, we have Zenons and they are REALLY powerful).
I never ever use side lights! I signal just about every manouvre But then I'm oldskool and remember (as I'm not old!) my training.
I just don't see whh Matrix signs don't tell people at least that would be a start, but then again I'm often passed in 50mph average speed areas by morons who can't / won't obey them

There are now three types of lights
1 daytime running lights ....front only, to make you more visible to oncoming traffic required by law from 2011 on new cars (see link in A C's post above)
2 sidelights front and rear
3 main lights front and rear
With 2 and 3 above it has always been and still is the responsibility of the driver to see that they are switched on or not.
No change there then !!
I don't really see a problem the only thing that has changed is cars are easier to see coming towards you, not a bad thing safety wise.
And if light levels are such that you feel the need to illuminate the rear too you can always switch them on.
Some newer models do it automatically.

Yep! Typical BMW driver. Always drives in the outside lane even when the roads are empty, full headlights and signals about every manouvre by flashing headlights to insist that every other road user gets out of the way.......

I know we are Eribaless at the moment BUT I'm guessing some of you drive newer vehicles with "automatic lighting" headlights? Well you may be surprised to know that often these only illuminate the front headliights and nothing else! So when travelling in inclement conditiions you will not be displaying rear lights! There is a simple solution however move the light switch to the fully on position (which I'm sure you know it's location without looking at the manual)
So my question really is "when travelling on auto lighting" does your on board computer recognise the caravan is attached and therefore illuminate it correctly? Just thought I'd bring it up as I see so many cars travelling with front lights on only, no rears! Next time your out and about take a look, you'll see
Been reading back the original post in this topic.
And to answer the question that I have now marked in bold type.
My car has a non vehicle specific towbar (not factory fitted) so all the wiring is spliced in behind the panels in the boot brake light to brake light rear light to rear light and so on so whatever lights the automatic lighting in the car turns on is transferred to the towed vehicle.
Factory fitted towbars (vehicle specific) are sometimes hooked up to do other things like sense a towing vehicle is attached,I can't comment on those as I have never had one.
However there is a distinction to be made that when you see cars that appear to have "automatic lighting" that only shows at the front it is not automatic lighting.
Automatic lighting turns all my car lights on front and rear,
front only are just daylight running lights and no-where in the 2 x 7 or 13 pin towbar connections is there a connection where daytime running lights can power up anything.
Hope that helps.

Thats what I was getting at and to be honest I think it's clear that no one else knew! If they did they would have shared a valuable piece of safety information, DLR does not put your trailer or caravan lights on!! Checked it with my local Plod earlier tonight which was why I revived the thread.
You must swith your DLR off and enter normal headlight mode, I'm also told DLR do not react to darkness! So once again your front may be lit but your back is'nt! I'll check ours tomorrow just to clarify, at least what happens on our 2015 BMW

Correct, and as I said earlier
Zitat
it has always been and still is the responsibility of the driver to see that they are switched on or not
Until they pass a law saying lights must be on ALL the time like they have in some countries for motorbikes.

Not quite sure that I understand this. DRL's (Daylight Running Lights) are on ALL the time except when main headlights are switched on. On most cars the user has the option, via the OBC (On Board Computer) to either use DRL's or not and that is because in some countries they should not be used. Either way - DRL's are not connected directly to the light sensor (sometimes a small dome on the dash front) so in theory you could drive at night with main lights switched off and use only DRL's. Of course you'd have to ensure that the main headlights were not set to 'Auto' otherwise they too would illuminate of course.
All of the above may be a lot of bullxxxx of course with my car being wired completely differently to everyone else .

My 2008 Audi has DRL but not an auto sensor for the headlights. There is an on/off switch for the DRL on the dashboard and when I switch the side lights or headlights on, the DRL are switched off.
The DRL are front only and have no effect on the caravan lights.
