Avtex telly hairils

Has anyone got one of these Avtex aerials, by any chance?

Is it any good?

We've got a satellite dish at the moment which is the terrier's testicles, provided of course that there's a line of sight to Mr Murdoch's tin can. If there isn't, we can't watch telly.

Now I know that the more committed Wesleyan members will tug on their hairiest shirts and admonish us vigorously for having a telly in the van first place, insisting that we should be bird-watching or hiking or listening to Radio 4 in crackly mono or attempting to get past page five of Finnegan's Wake for the umpteenth time by the orange glow of my great uncle Bill's Davy Lamp.

However, it's our holiday, and if we choose to watch telly instead of brushing up on our macramé skills, whittling clothes pegs or playing quoits in the rain, then we will.

So there

Anyway. We've got a log periodic aerial like this one (but rather shorter) which we could use if I ever remembered to take it, but it's just so awkward and cumbersome and covered in irritating pointy bits that I forget to take it on purpose. Antennas like that are generally acknowledged to be the best all-round aerials for telly reception, but I can't help thinking that they're much better suited to permanent installations rather than having to be untangled from the nylons, skimpy underwear, bits of string, scraps of bog paper and the rat's nest of small electronic gadget charging cables that they become festooned with in transit.

So I've been looking at those Avtex things, which appear to be a much more elegant solution. The thing is, elegance ain't worth beans if it isn't a solution at all and the television picture is pants, and having a built-in signal amplifier is only any good if the signal it receives is nice and clean. A rubbish signal made stronger and more rubbish is about as much use as mudflaps on a tortoise.

So are they any good?

They're quite expensive, but Avtex stuff generally seems to be quite expensive, and that begs the perennial question; is Avtex stuff worth the extra or not?

It'd be nice to have a decent, compact and convenient aerial as a standby in case I've misread Google's satellite view of a site and we find ourselves pitched in the dead centre of a satellite-proof and impenetrably coniferous spinney.

We could always have a couple of sherbets and play naked Twister by candlelight instead I suppose, but having a couple of sherbets and playing naked Twister by candlelight doesn't give me quite the frisson of excitement that it used to do thirty years ago.

Well, that's not quite true.

It gives me the same frisson of excitement, but sadly not my partner in the ruddy-faced and giggling debauchery of a youth long passed.

Sigh...

I have one, used with the Avtex telly, only used it twice so far with excellent picture . But I did have the built in 12v booster switched on so can't say what what it would be like without a signal booster. I had mine on the roof using the fixed sucker . Paul.

I've been considering something like this (as recommended by Hob).

I've got the Avtex aerial. (STH3000?)

It requires a 5v power feed which is provided by the Avtex TV. I think it works very well.

Thanks, Mr P

Am I right in thinking that it comes with a 12 to 5v adapter affair so that you can power the amplifier from a fag lighter-type socket if you don't have an Avtex telly with 5v out?

Yes, that was what I found in the reviews and some also reported that it gave good reception without the amplifier being used.

Yes that's right it does but I wired ours straight into a 12v circuit from the battery.

I reckon I'd do the same were I to get one, though having said that I'm almost always guilty of ignoring the simple solution if there's a more complicated one available.

Like wiring in one of these, so I could keep the plug on the end of the aerial lead. Why? I don't know. Snipping the plug off and hard wiring is a much more sensible way of doing it, but I just can't suppress the desire to tinker unnecessarily.

Speaking of which, I don't know if you've seen these USB charging sockets. They're a much neater solution than having clunky adaptors sticking out of 230v sockets, and a whole lot cheaper than the CBE (or Berker) versions. The other advantage of the cheaper version is that one of the outputs is a nice fat 2.1a which will charge almost anything, whereas one solitary amp might not.

Those same people also do a 12v socket/voltmeter/USB charger at a good price, and there's a version with USB and 12v sockets together.

And the reviews are sound.

As PhilipM said above I have one of those, many years ago (when it was cutting edge technology) I bought a dvd recorder and now have about 300 disks of old tv programs (rather watch old ones than most of the rubbish they make now)

By happy coincidence I had a smallish tv spare at the time with a built in dvd player so don't need to take one with me.

When all else fails I sit outside drinking pink fizzy stuff and throw the cork at the bear.

That could be construed as cruelty to bears unless Gladly is allowed to throw corks back.
Can't help on the TV front at all. We take Dvds which we watch on the laptop or just get very drunk and play scrabble. It doesn't improve the spelling but it does make the scoring far less important

We've got an Avtex telly + Avtex aerial. Very pleased with both so far. Did have some trouble at first until that nice Mr. Frantone quietly suggested we might not have the power switched on from the TV to the aerial. After that all has been fine. Of course if you're on a site with no signal nothing will help. (The Avtex telly is very good for showing DVDs too).

With regards to Tony`s comment about wiring directly to a 12volt battery.

My understanding is that a 12volt battery can not supply a consistent 12 volts. There for any wiring should go through a suitably system that will enable a constant 12 volt supply.

The USB Charing sockets are a very good alternative, especially in today's modern society where we seem to be dependent on the `charger` . At home I have installed 240 volt plugs with built in 5 volt 2 amp USB charging ports. I am certainly going to wire USB charging points into my Triton.

If you look on eBay I think you will find such USB charging ports are cheaper. Not only that but I have found a usb 5volt to 12volt Charing cable that will provide the constant 12volt supply I will need for a bit of tech equipment I have for the Triton. Price is under £3 including delivery. Though for some reason I can not post a link to the eBay product. Search term is : USB Male A to DC 5v Power Supply Cable DC 5.5mm x 2.1 mm DC Jack Plug Charger
