I use a Dacia Duster 1.5 Diesel 4x4, it has plenty of torque to drag my Familia 320, with ease, it is also very good on fuel solo and whilst towing the van. The Duster is not everyone's cup of tea no doubt but we are happy with it..
The car is a good compromise, powerful enough to tow the van and not too big for everyday usage...

We were advised to get a Mégane - a thing with a turbo; Yann says he didn't notice the caravan behind...................shows what I know about cars!
The Dacia Duster has the same Renault engine if yours is a 1.5 dci turbo. .....

We will also be looking to change our Chevrolet Orlando 1.8 diesel in the not too distant future. We have suffered for 2 years with the Dpf and tried everything to overcome the problems we are having with it. Had enough now and worry that replacing it with another diesel engine could give us more Dpf problems. Any recommendations for our next car, we like 7seaters if poss as this gives plenty of boot space or extra seats for the grandkids, a petrol with enough pulling power to tow our Familia with ease and a sunroof if poss. Our last car was a Zafira which did fit the bill but we have lost all confidence with them since the problem of some setting on fire. We have looked casually at the Citroen C3 picasso 1.2 puretech and can't believe the towing capabilities, it seems too good to be true as it seems to be a perfect match for our Eriba, how can this be with the engine being so small? As we don't want to swap one problem for another lots of research will be done before we swap vehicles. Any ideas folks? Thank you. Ellen.

Well, we had to change our car - before I had a Clio so not big enough to tow the eriba. I went to the garage and asked what they would recommend to tow and was told the Mégane was ideal. It has a thing to aid in up-hill starting and other things that, apparently, make it ideal. But what do I know. I trusted the garage. Try visiting few and see what they suggest?
It's not going to be easy . We were told that many lies before we bought our present car I find it difficult to believe anything the salespeople tell us. We just loved the new VW Tiguan as it ticked all the boxes, problem is its diesel so back to the drawing board

Hi Ellen and Mark.
I'm no expert so all I can give is an account of our experience with our Touran 2litre TDI 140 BHP (similar to the Tiquan).
We've now had it for 5 years and have done 55,000 miles in it, nearly all towing. At about 20,000 miles and while staying with the Frantones near London in 2013 we had a bout of the dreaded DPF's (commonly known as the Aaron Calders). On the advice of Tony Frantone, we took it up a nearby dual carriageway in 5th gear at about 2500rpm and after about 15 minutes all was put right again.
Touch wood, we've not had the same experience again although I do give it a 5th gear, 15 minute "squirt" from time to time. When we are not travelling, we only do about 4000 miles in the year as we only use the car once a week on average to drive down the motorway to our nearest town some 7 miles away.
Currently, probably because of the flat country, we are getting 42mpg + when towing and about 55-58mpg solo.
The Touran isn't a 4 wheel drive but had acres more space than the Tiguan so each has it's place in the range. We think of the Tiguan as the 4 wheel drive version of the Touran.
By the way, ours wasn't called up as one of the VW's that was trying to cheat the rules.
