Caravan stuck on car
Caravan stuck on car

Well, we took Betty to get her number plate last Friday. My husband had a lot of trouble getting the caravan onto the car - after a lot of oil and muscle, it clicked on. Off we went. When we came back, he had a terrible time getting the caravan off the car. He's thinking that we probably need to replace that part of the hitch. Have any of you had this problem and how did you solve it? It just seems to jam whatever he tries.
Which type do you have?

This sometimes happens if the hitch is still compressed i.e. there is pressure on it because the car is squeezing the damper.
It will show by the rubber gaiter being bunched up. Push the caravan backwards a little to extend the drawbar but not so far as to stretch it so that it is then pulling on the hitch 'cos this will cause the same symptom.
Another possible cause could be the friction pads sticking on the ball maybe because their shafts are gundged up.
Good luck!
PS oops, just seen your pic and don't recognise that hitch. Sorry!

In one of the photos - the one of the inside - it looks as if one of the friction pad carriers might be stuck on, which would explain why the hitch wouldn't release, but on the other picture they both look as if they've retracted properly.
There doesn't appear to be much meat on the pad which hasn't retracted, mind...

I see what you mean.
Check the pads both go in and out when you operate the locking handle, the black handle should move the pads in and out.

The only other tow hitches I've heard of fitted to an Eriba other than the ALKO is the Winterhoff but it looks nothing like that.
However, it does look as though the two side fitted friction pads shown on the upside down hitch photo look as though they could be withdrawn by pulling the lobster claw levers apart. If then the ball fits, they could possible be pushed together causing the pads to grip the ball using the black handle that Nev is talking about.
Also, Tony's suggestion regarding pushing the van back to extend the bellows is good. We always have to do that before unhitching the van.
What you must ensure is that you don't get any oil on the inside cup of the tow hitch, the pads or the tow ball.

I can't find another one that looks like it anywhere.
The other option is to replace it with an AL-KO AKS1300 (not a cheap option)
