Referendum

Apologies for starting something political, but I'm not going to express an opinion. I just wanted to know if there is any provision for voting in the referendum in June if you are not going to be in the UK? All I can find on the net is in regards to those living abroad. The normal postal vote will be no good as you have to receive it before you go (no guarantee) and send it back in time. I'm sure many of us are in the same boat as we take advantage of travelling abroad during the spring.

As it was only announced yesterday it will probably take a while for them to get their act together.

Some of us are not eligible to vote in this referendum which I personally find offensive.

If you are a British citizen living abroad, you can apply to be an overseas voter.

You must have been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years and be eligible to vote in UK Parliamentary general elections and European Parliamentary elections.

I have been registered to vote in the UK a while back now but let it lapse and am, therefore, not qualified to vote in current UK Parliamentary general elections. I can, however, vote in European Parliamentary elections as the qualification for this is upon when you live i.e. me Germany, and not on past abodes.

So even though I am a British citizen, carry a UK Passport and served my country for 13 years in the armed forces I am unable to vote in what is probably the most important referendum of recent times. Disgusted.

We were in Italy for the General Elections last year and were able to nominate our son to vote for us. Just a Proxy Vote form to the Returning Officer is required which you should be able to download now from your local council website. It will cover the local elections in England and the Scottish and Welsh Parliamentary elections which are already happening in May and also a further unspecified election on a given day.

I think I will bury my head in the sand till July, its not going to be much fun.

Thank you Charlie. Have downloaded the forms to send off. After speaking to the local council they say that they can send our son forms so that he can do our vote by post.

I am pleasantly surprised to see I am not the only person on here who lives in the EU. I and my wife have preserved our right to vote. However this guarantees nothing as we have in the past received our voting papers too late. Whether this was a clerical error or deliberate - who knows? We are seriously considering returning to the UK so we can vote in person. It's about time we visited the old country again.

'In continental Europe' might be more accurate, Gus.

i stand corrected. Should have written "elsewhere in the EU". To be utterly pedantic "in continental Europe" does not work either. I could be living in Eire for example.

In fact I'm looking out over a blue sea under a cloudless sky. There is even snow on the mountains behind me and the forecast maximum today is 18 degrees C. How I suffer for my art.
