Does anybody know a way to repair a split in a metal awning pole. Its in the bent corner section.I don't really want to go to get it welded professionally as it'll be pricey.Have seen something called Quiksteel Epox Puttty that you can use for repairs but not sure if it's any good ?

Without seeing the damage it's difficult to comment.
However, for years we've carried Araldite Rapid as part of our kit. We've found it the answer to 1001 problems. http://go-araldite.com/products/epoxy-ad...d-2-x-15ml-tube
When looking for the above link, I came across this which is new to me. http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-...l-tubes-2x-15ml

The split has developed into a tiny gape.Do you think there might be any kind of tape or other to wrap around before applying the Araldyte, just so the Araldyte doesn't just go inside of the hollow pole?

If you don't need to pull the small gap together then you'll probably find that when the two elements of the resin are mixed it's quite a stiff paste so probably by applying a small dollop to the split and leaving it for a minute or two before smoothing it out and applying a little more, you shouldn't waste that much through the gap.
Be careful not to mix too much at a time though for it hardens off very quickly.

Is the split on a straight i.e. round section of pole? Is so a circular clip - those often found around rubber pipes in cars and which you tighten up with a screwdriver. That at least should stop the split from opening up further.

It's on the curved part of the pole, which is the uppermost part of the awning corner next to the van ?
Perhaps a couple of Jubilee clips, one on each straight bit might do the trick.

some out of box thinking
we had an exhaust split long ago, no part available at time so
cut up a tin can, perhaps tinned peas they are smaller than spuds
put over the hole use the wire in kit to hold, then wrap exhaust repair tape round followed by the wire, it was such a great repair they had bother removing
in your application could finish with insulting tape to ensure sharp edge doesn't rub on awning
or switch out the pole with copper plumbing pipe 22mm
both fairly extreme repairing
